Engineering Manager - Mobile

The role / impact

As an Engineering Manager, you will drive the delivery of high-quality software by leading one of our high-performing mobile engineering teams. You will act as the technical anchor, balancing roadmap delivery with a relentless focus on team growth, system health, and code quality. Your influence ensures a delicate balance between short-term product velocity and long-term operational excellence.

You will guide your team to hone their craft, championing AI-native workflows and resolving complex technical challenges to deliver impactful outcomes. By translating high-level business goals into executable engineering plans, you will make informed, data-driven decisions that align with Xero's mission to make running a business beautiful.

The team / how they connect

We are the engineering team behind the Xero Accounting mobile app. We thrive in a hybrid, high velocity and cross-functional environment, partnering closely with Product and Design teams to deliver beautiful mobile experiences for customers, faster. We collaborate deeply with web, platform and domain teams to ensure a reliable and seamless experience across all channels.

The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on

• Ship Value: Lead and deliver high impact mobile workflows such as a new dashboard, notifications and tasks, insights, banking flow improvements, and mobile subscriptions within the mobile channel.

• Operational Excellence: Champion a production-first mindset by automating delivery pipelines, solving common failure patterns, and leading incident responses to ensure resilient systems.

• Efficiency: Drive value by identifying technical waste, simplifying complex designs, and leveraging modern practices, including AI-native workflows, to increase engineering velocity.

• Technical Health: Maintain available and scalable systems aligned to Xero's technology strategy, ensuring technical debt is managed proactively alongside feature work.

Where and how you can work

Our teams are located in Australia and this hybrid role is based in Melbourne or Sydney, offering the flexibility to balance deep-focus work with high-bandwidth collaboration in our beautiful offices.

• You bring genuine mobile engineering credibility, whether as a former mobile engineer who has grown into leadership, or as an experienced engineering manager with a strong track record of leading mobile teams. Either way, you can hold your own in a technical mobile conversation and earn the trust of the engineers you lead.

• You have a strong track record in people management, with a heart for coaching engineers, nurturing inclusive team cultures, and supporting individual career growth.

• Your expertise in strategy and execution allows you to lead seamless delivery and planning, turning high-level roadmaps into clear, achievable engineering milestones across multiple squads and workstreams.

• You bring a dedication to technical and operational excellence, ensuring the systems your team builds are scalable, secure, and maintained to the highest standards.

• You are a skilled communicator who can influence and align stakeholders at all levels, navigating complex trade-offs while keeping technical and product goals moving in the same direction.

• You have a strong architectural mindset with the ability to lead high-scale distributed systems, and you are comfortable providing guidance on system design and supporting your team through incident responses and proactive health monitoring.

• Customer obsession is at the heart of how you lead. You ensure your team never loses sight of the customer impact behind their work, and you champion decisions that put customer outcomes at the centre of engineering priorities.
