  • We're embarking on an engineering transformation at CommSec!

  • You have full-stack .NET/React expertise and own outcomes.

  • Together we build the future of digital investing at scale.

Do work that matters:

This is a senior technical leadership opportunity at the heart of CommSec Technology, where you'll help shape the future of one of Australia's leading digital investing platforms. As a Staff Software Engineer within the CommSec Software Engineering Chapter, you'll provide strategic and technical leadership across end-to-end product delivery, guiding the design, development, deployment and operation of customer-facing digital experiences used at scale. Working across modern cloud-native architectures, distributed systems and full stack technologies, you'll lead solution design discussions, influence architectural direction and solve complex engineering challenges that balance performance, security, reliability and speed to market. You'll partner closely with product, design and engineering leaders to turn ambitious ideas into impactful customer outcomes, while helping raise the engineering bar across the broader Digital & Customer Crew.

In this role, you'll embody a true "you build it, you own it" mindset, taking accountability for the entire software lifecycle from concept and architecture through to production operations and continuous improvement. You'll provide technical mentorship to engineers, champion engineering excellence and drive best practices across modern development, testing, observability, DevOps and platform reliability. Whether you're designing scalable APIs with .NET, building engaging customer experiences with React and TypeScript, optimising cloud-based platforms on AWS, or leading critical architectural decisions, your influence will extend well beyond the code. This is an opportunity to make a lasting impact, combining deep technical expertise with strategic leadership to help shape the future of digital investing while empowering teams to deliver secure, resilient and customer-focused solutions at scale.

See yourself in our team:

See yourself in the CommSec Software Engineering Chapter, part of the Digital & Customer Crew that powers Australia's leading online trading and investing platform. At CommSec, we're helping millions of Australians build their financial future through intuitive, secure and high-performing digital experiences. Our engineers work across the full technology stack and the entire software delivery lifecycle, designing, building, testing, deploying and continually improving products that directly impact customers every day. From real-time trading experiences and customer-facing digital channels to scalable cloud platforms and intelligent automation, you'll tackle complex engineering challenges at scale while leveraging modern AI-powered development tools to accelerate innovation and deliver exceptional outcomes.

This is a career-defining opportunity to join a team where technology is at the heart of business transformation. You'll work alongside some of the industry's best engineers in a culture that champions full-stack ownership, continuous learning and engineering excellence. Using modern cloud-native architectures, DevSecOps practices, automation and AI-assisted engineering, you'll have the freedom to experiment, solve meaningful problems and influence the future of digital investing. At CommSec, every line of code has a visible impact, every release matters, and every engineer has the opportunity to shape experiences trusted by millions of Australians.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Have deep full-stack engineering expertise, building and owning modern applications across React, TypeScript, C# and .NET, with no distinction between front-end and back-end responsibilities.

  • Thrive in a true "you build it, you run it" environment, taking end-to-end ownership from architecture and design through to deployment, production operations, reliability and continuous improvement.

  • Lead technical strategy and influence architectural direction, making high-impact technology decisions that shape the future of CommSec's digital platforms.

  • Demonstrate exceptional system design and solution architecture capabilities, balancing scalability, performance, security, resilience and delivery outcomes when solving complex engineering challenges.

  • Build scalable APIs, distributed systems and data platforms, with strong expertise across SQL, modern database technologies and service-oriented architectures.

  • Drive engineering excellence through modern software practices including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, performance optimisation, security and operational readiness.

  • Leverage cloud-native technologies including AWS, Docker and Kubernetes to deliver highly available, resilient and scalable customer-facing platforms.

  • Partner with product, design and engineering leaders to translate business priorities into robust technical solutions that deliver meaningful customer and commercial outcomes.

  • Mentor and elevate engineers across teams, setting technical standards, driving best practice adoption and creating a culture of accountability, ownership and continuous learning.

Tech skills:

We don't expect you to know everything, but experience in several of the following will set you up for success:

  • Architecture & Design: Strong system design, solution architecture and technical decision-making capabilities (core assessment focus).

  • Back End: C#, .NET Core preferred; Java considered if willing to transition to .NET. Required for API development and backend services.

  • Front End: React and TypeScript preferred for modern web application development.

  • Database: Strong SQL fundamentals, MSSQL or equivalent SQL/NoSQL databases.

  • Cloud: AWS preferred; Azure acceptable. Cloud knowledge can be developed on the job.

  • DevOps & Operations: CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, monitoring, observability and production support.

  • Engineering Practices: Testing, performance optimisation, reliability, security and end-to-end ownership.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
