As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll combine software engineering, infrastructure, automation and operational expertise to deliver trusted enterprise identity capabilities. You’ll lead complex initiatives from discovery and architecture through to development, deployment and ongoing optimisation.

Recognised as a technical subject matter expert, you’ll influence strategy and architecture, guide engineering decisions and mentor others. You’ll champion modern engineering practices that embed security, quality, automation, observability and operational ownership throughout the software development lifecycle.

Group Security is part of Technology and brings together security and resilience capabilities spanning cyber security, protective security and business resilience, fraud technology and operations, and cyber defence. Our purpose is to safeguard a brighter future for all by securing the bank, protecting customers, strengthening recovery capability and delivering strong security outcomes.

Within Group Security Technology, our team builds enterprise identity capabilities that improve visibility of accounts and access across the organisation. We focus on account discovery, classification, enrichment and governance onboarding, creating trusted identity data and secure, streamlined self-service experiences.

You’ll work with engineers, architects and business stakeholders to build enterprise-grade solutions that improve security, strengthen controls and enable automation at scale.


Your impact

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the design and delivery of complex enterprise solutions across discovery, architecture, development and deployment.
  • Create innovative engineering solutions for challenging identity, access and security problems.
  • Influence architecture decisions to ensure solutions are secure, scalable, resilient and fit for purpose.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring across engineering teams.
  • Champion DevSecOps practices through automation, testing, observability and operational excellence.
  • Drive continuous improvement through engineering standards, governance and modern delivery practices.

We’re interested in hearing from people who
  • Have extensive experience delivering enterprise technology solutions across architecture, software engineering, implementation and optimisation.
  • Bring deep knowledge of the software development lifecycle and Agile delivery practices.
  • Apply a strong DevSecOps mindset, embedding security, quality, automation and operational ownership into engineering.
  • Have experience designing and delivering cloud-native solutions, particularly on AWS.
  • Can influence technical direction and engage effectively with engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Enjoy mentoring others and fostering a culture of continuous learning, experimentation and innovation.

Experience across several of the following technologies will help set you up for success:

Python, Java, JavaScript or TypeScript; React or Angular; microservices and event-driven architectures; databases and serverless technologies; GitHub Actions, Jenkins, TeamCity, Snyk, SonarQube or Octopus; Terraform or CloudFormation; Docker and Kubernetes; and API gateways, networking and cloud security.

Exposure to artificial intelligence, machine learning or large language models is highly regarded.
