As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll provide hands-on technical leadership within the Complex Investigations group, helping develop and evolve the technology that supports economic crime investigations. You’ll work across the software engineering lifecycle, from solution design and development through to testing, deployment and production operations.

You’ll join a collaborative engineering environment focused on building high-quality technology and raising standards across teams. The Complex Investigations and Assisted Investigations crews work with a shared application landscape, with this position providing full-stack engineering capability to the Complex Investigations group.

In this role, you will:

  • Strong Hands-on software engineering and enjoy working across multiple layers of the technology stack to design, build and maintain high-quality, scalable, secure and resilient full-stack software solutions.
  • Lead solution and software design, making pragmatic architectural decisions that balance business outcomes, engineering quality, security, reliability and maintainability.
  • Design and build modern web applications using contemporary frontend frameworks and engineering practices.
  • Design and develop scalable backend services, APIs, microservices and distributed systems.
  • Establish effective API contracts and integration patterns across applications and platforms.
  • Design solutions using appropriate synchronous, asynchronous and event-driven architecture patterns.
  • Build secure and scalable data access layers across relational, NoSQL and other appropriate data technologies.
  • Design software for cloud-native environments, including containerisation, orchestration and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Build automated CI/CD capabilities that enable frequent, reliable and secure software delivery.
  • Champion automated testing across unit, component, integration, contract, API and end-to-end layers.
  • Build observability, reliability and resilience into applications by design, rather than treating them as operational afterthoughts.
  • Implement effective telemetry across logs, metrics and distributed traces to support proactive monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Apply secure-by-design and DevSecOps principles throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Diagnose complex production problems, lead root-cause analysis and implement sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Identify technical debt and systemic engineering problems and drive pragmatic strategies to address them.
  • Lead technical design and code reviews and raise engineering standards across teams.
  • Mentor and coach engineers while creating an environment of technical curiosity, collaboration and continuous improvement.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:


You’ll bring strong hands-on engineering capability, broad technical judgement and the confidence to influence beyond a single squad. Adaptability is important, as the team is seeking engineers who can select the right technology for the problem rather than working within one language or platform.

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, scalable, and robust software solutions using using two or more languages such as Java, Golang, Python, Node.js/TypeScript, C# or equivalent.
  • Can move comfortably between frontend, backend, APIs, data, cloud infrastructure and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience building modern web applications using React, Angular or equivalent frameworks and experience with frontend testing frameworks such as Jest, Cypress, Playwright or equivalent.
  • Experience designing microservices and distributed systems and Strong understanding of concurrency, scalability, fault tolerance and distributed system design.
  • Experience designing REST APIs and exposure to GraphQL, gRPC or equivalent technologies where appropriate.
  • Strong Experience working in cloud environments (AWS).Experience in containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes and IaC tools
  • Worked with CI/CD and DevSecOps practices and involved in executing deployment strategies including blue/green, canary and progressive delivery.
  • Ability to introduce reliability capabilities including automated safe releases, rollback mechanisms, health checks, fault tolerance and resilience patterns into existing systems.
  • Good Implementation experience of TDD, BDD and test automation.. Experience designing effective testing strategies across unit, integration, contract, API and end-to-end testing.
  • Experience with technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch or equivalent.
  • Exposure to Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI-assisted software engineering.
