Our Why

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people's lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

About the Role

This one's for the accountant who was always more interested in the software.

You know who you are. You survived the audits, built the reconciliation templates, understood the internal controls better than anyone in the room — but while everyone else was grinding through month-end, you were the one quietly asking why does the system make this so hard? You mapped the process in your head before the close was done. You logged the workarounds. You were the person your team called when something broke, and you already knew why before they finished the sentence.

You understand what good financial software can do for the people using it, and you can't stop thinking about the gap between that potential and the reality.

That's exactly who we're looking for.

As a Senior Product Analyst in our ERP Financials team, you'll be the bridge between deep accounting reality and the engineers, QA team, and support staff who build and maintain it. You'll take financial processes — the ones that only fully make sense if you've lived them — and translate them into specifications that a developer with no accounting background can actually build from. You'll map the user journeys, pressure-test the assumptions, research requirements with genuine rigour, and make sure what gets shipped reflects how finance teams actually work.

This is a role for someone who can hold the full picture: the accounting treatment, the user experience, the technical constraint, and the business outcome — all at once, across multiple workstreams, without losing the thread on any of them.

You'll work closely with Product Managers, Developers, QA, and Support — bringing the accounting credibility and technical curiosity that makes the difference between a product that ticks a compliance box and one that finance professionals genuinely want to use.

Our offices are based in Melbourne. We like to bring people together in person when we can, but we are mindful of the benefits of working from home for work/life balance. We therefore leave it to you and the team you join to figure out what works best!

What You'll Do

As Senior Product Analyst, you'll be focused on:

·       Translating complex financial accounting requirements into clear, unambiguous, developer-ready product specifications and user stories — covering areas like period-end close, audit trails, bank reconciliation, internal controls, journal processing, accounts payable and receivable, budgeting, fixed assets, and financial reporting.

·       Mapping end-to-end user journeys across core financial workflows with a critical eye on the actual experience of the end user sitting at the screen.

·       Conducting deep requirements research — going well beyond what a stakeholder first asks for, to understand the underlying accounting problem, the compliance context, and what a genuinely good solution looks like before a line of spec is written.

·       Partnering with Product Managers to shape roadmap priorities, surface requirements grounded in real accounting practice, and ensure product decisions hold up under the scrutiny of someone who's been through an external audit.

·       Working directly with developers, QA, and support teams to ensure accuracy in what gets built and tested — because in financial software, the detail is never just a detail.

·       Identifying gaps between current product behaviour and best-practice financial process, and building an evidenced, well-reasoned case for what needs to change and why.

·       Context switching with intent — moving between strategic roadmap thinking, granular spec work, a support query that needs your domain knowledge, and a developer question that needs an accounting answer, without losing quality across any of them.

·       Carrying subject matter expertise across the Financials domain — becoming the team's trusted voice on what good looks like, and actively raising the bar for how financial requirements are captured, articulated, and delivered.

·       Demonstrating leadership in practice — not through a title, but through the standard you set, the way you approach ambiguity, and your willingness to bring others with you. We're building something for the long term, and we're looking for someone who is too.

·

We're a pretty agile company and are keen to respond to customer, technology, and internal stakeholder needs as they evolve — and that can mean our roles grow and shift with us.

What You'll Bring

You won't tick every box in exactly the same way, and that's fine. But here's the profile we're genuinely looking for:

The non-negotiables:

·       A professional accounting qualification (CPA, CA, CIMA or equivalent) — or equivalent depth earned through years of doing the real work at a level that shows.

·       Real, hands-on financial accounting experience - you've closed the books, prepared for external audit, understood internal control frameworks, and you know what breaks when controls aren't designed well.

·       A systems accounting background - you understand both sides of the ledger and the data model underneath it, and you've used that combination to make systems work better for the people depending on them.

·       Demonstrated ability to translate complex accounting processes into structured product requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria that non-accountants can design and build from — without losing the accuracy that accounting demands.

·       Strong user journey and process mapping skills — you know the difference between what users say they do and what they actually do, and you design for the latter.

·       Comfort and credibility working directly with technical teams — you can hold a conversation with a developer, spot when a requirement is technically underspecified, and know when to push back before it becomes someone else's problem in UAT.

·       Self-directed and self-motivated — you don't wait for someone to hand you a work plan. You identify what needs doing, prioritise intelligently across competing demands, and drive your own workstreams to completion.

·       Exceptional written communication — your specifications are read, not reinterpreted. Your user stories have acceptance criteria that mean something.

We'd love it if you also have:

·       Experience working within or alongside an ERP vendor, financial software company, or implementation partner — you understand how product is built from the inside, not just consumed from the outside.

·       Familiarity with Agile delivery practices and tools (Jira, Confluence, or similar).

·       Exposure to public sector or local government financial frameworks — not essential, but a genuine advantage.

·       An understanding of integration patterns between financial systems and adjacent platforms — payroll, procurement, reporting, banking.

·       Any formal product management or business analysis training or certification.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
