Join us as we strive for a sustainable future for our communities and the world we live in.

Become part of our global network of skilled engineers, scientists, auditors, planners and environmental specialists, all working together to leave this world better than we found it.

Who are we looking for?

GHD’s Victorian Flora team, part of the broader Ecology, Natural Sciences and Heritage Group has an opportunity for a Botanist – at either Senior or Intermediate Experience Level.

You’ll deliver a broad range of conservation, impact assessment and monitoring projects, working with vegetation types that include grassland, wetland, forest and woodland communities, and in partnership with GHD’s clients, land managers and state government bodies.

You’ll be encouraged to focus on areas and projects that you are truly passionate about, develop your specific interests over time, and make the role your own. Work with our national ecology service line in other states and territories to explore new landscapes.

You’ll also make a meaningful impact while mentoring and developing others, whilst having the opportunity to build on your own technical skills.  The role allows for a true work-life balance in a fun, flexible, supportive team of passionate Ecologists!

This diverse and exciting position will see you involved in:

  • Field-based botanical survey work, including vegetation mapping, ecological monitoring, targeted threatened flora survey and Vegetation Quality Assessments using the Habitat Hectares method.

  • Ecological impact assessments and offsetting for a range of projects from small scale infrastructure impact assessments to assisting with major projects of state significance, eg. technical documentation for Environment Effects Statements.

  • Ecological monitoring, involving the design and implementation of monitoring programs, surveys for threatened species, running long-term monitoring projects, assessing the benefits of environmental watering projects.

  • Preparation of proposals and technical reports for public and private sector clients.

  • Managing both ecology focused and multi-disciplinary projects.

What would you bring to the team?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a Botany, Ecology or Environmental Science major.

  • 3+ years (Intermediate) or 7+ years (Senior) experience conducting vegetation surveys across south-east Australia, ideally gained within a consulting or professional services environment.

  • Strong botanical identification skills, including experience using dissecting microscopes and identification keys.

  • Experience undertaking Habitat Hectare assessments and VQA accreditation

  • Excellent listening and communication skills along with a readiness to develop relationships with your network

  • Willingness to work flexibly and independently, particularly when undertaking flora surveys and traveling to remote locations.

  • Understanding of national and state environmental legislation and policy (eg. EPBC Act, FFG Act, Planning and Environment Act).

  • A current full Victorian driver’s license.

  • We will consider applicants to work in any of GHD's five Victorian offices.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
