  • Full-time, Continuing position

  • Attractive salary packaging commensurate with experience

  • Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, and hybrid ways of working

RMIT has some exciting opportunities as part of its Research Infrastructure Signature Initiative investment. These positions are supporting the development of an RMIT approach to research infrastructure and a substantial uplift in its Digital Research Infrastructure.

RMIT currently lacks a coordinated, university-wide approach to research infrastructure. As Associate Director, Research Infrastructure, you will build the Research Infrastructure Unit from the ground up — developing the roadmap, securing investment, establishing governance, and connecting RMIT with national infrastructure schemes including NCRIS.

This is a genuine greenfield opportunity for an experienced research infrastructure professional to leave a lasting mark on a major Australian university.

About You

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

  • Extensive knowledge of research infrastructure requirements in higher education, spanning both physical facilities and digital platforms

  • Proven experience engaging and influencing a wide range of internal and external stakeholders — across faculties, property services, industry, and government

  • A track record in governance leadership and compliance, including establishing reporting frameworks and risk controls

  • Demonstrated commitment to RMIT's values of inclusion, innovation, and integrity, with a leadership style that inspires and motivates

  • A tertiary degree in a technical discipline (Science, Engineering, Biomedical, Design or related); a research degree is preferred

  • Ability to foster collaborative culture and drive cross-unit cooperation to achieve university-wide infrastructure goals

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.

About the Group

Research Infrastructure is a Horizon 2 Signature Initiative of RMIT's Knowledge with Action strategy. This role establishes the central Research Infrastructure Office and drives the development of a coherent RI roadmap and investment proposal — working across RMIT's three Colleges, Property Services, and ITS to deliver sustainable, impactful research infrastructure.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
