What's It Like to Work at Notion?
Notion Employee Perspectives
What is your role, and what attracted you to Notion? Describe the moment when you knew you’d found the right fit.
I’m a software engineer at Notion focusing on product engineering. When I was looking for my next career opportunity, I was quite picky. I wanted to be in a place that was doing more good for society, and where I could have good ownership that would directly provide value to users. I come from startup roots, so I wanted to be experimental and directly collaborate with users without having to deal with large layers of red tape. I wanted to focus on building and shipping.
That’s where Notion came into play. I was attracted to the “startup-y” growth phase that the company was in and the strong tie to the communities of users that depend and rely on this product. I learned that ambassadors often have the opportunity to work with teams directly to determine how features work, and I thought “Yeah, that’s the type of connection I’m looking for!”
What’s your favorite part about working at Notion?
I enjoy how grounded we are with our community. While working on features, I can say, “Hey, let’s see how ambassadors are using this and get their input on how it could work!” and receive valuable feedback. I love knowing that the features we build matter to users, even the small improvements. It was incredible seeing the projects my team and I shipped presented during our user conference called “Make With Notion” while watching the live reactions from ambassadors and others in the audience. It’s been exciting to see how they use our tools to build their businesses and personal systems.
Notion is in an interesting position with lots of work to be done, which means there’s plenty of room to explore different parts of the company. While I have a home base team, I’ve had opportunities to work on various initiatives, like AI-related projects. I gain new perspectives, bring those ideas back to my home team, and share them. Plus, everyone I’ve met across all roles has been truly genuine and kind.
What advice would you give to job seekers looking to join your growing team?
Don’t be afraid to wear different hats. Even if you apply as an engineer, there are so many opportunities to flex and build other skills, like becoming opinionated in product decisions, pulling and analyzing metrics and even having a hand at UI/UX decisions.
