We're looking for an Engineering Team Lead with people leadership and a software development/technical background. This role will be based in one of our AU offices (hybrid) in either Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Canberra.


The Payroll division’s purpose is to make it easier for small business owners and their advisors to pay and manage their people. We take the complexity out of Payroll for employers to save them time and ensure that their employees are paid correctly.


We are looking for a Team Lead - Engineering to join us and lead two pods of talented engineers. Working together with Lead Engineers, Product Managers and Designers, you will be responsible for engineering performance and delivery, building high performing teams who build and maintain it right whilst delivering efficiently. You will achieve this by growing your people into awesome Xeros, fostering a culture of teamwork and promoting excellent engineering and delivery practices. 


This is a high impact role leading two pods working in the heart of the Payroll product on critical customer jobs. To be successful in this role, you must be able to understand the technical decisions the team is making, to ask the right questions and to challenge the team to arrive at the right outcomes.

What you'll do:

  • Drive a culture of engagement and improvement, ensuring the team understands how their work helps our customers and our business achieve great outcomes
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with Product, Design and other key stakeholders in the division/organisation
  • Drive efficient, predictable delivery - fostering a culture of quality and trust
  • Help resolve roadblocks that the team faces
  • Ensure your team adheres to Xero engineering practices and builds software to a high standard
  • Meet regularly with your direct reports and encourage them to become the highest performing version of themselves they can be, using a variety of techniques which may include performance feedback, career development, coaching and mentoring
  • As needed, review and manage performance, remuneration and facilitate any remedial actions.

  • AWS
  • Docker & Kubernetes
  • React and other front-end technologies
  • SQL Server
  • Industry leading CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, tracing, and logging tools
