As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll join one of our core engineering squads responsible for merchant onboarding or payment processing capabilities. You'll help design and build products that power the end-to-end eCommerce journey for some of Australia's largest businesses while influencing technical direction across a growing engineering organisation.

This is an opportunity to work on a platform that is actively being transformed, replacing legacy vendor solutions with modern cloud-native services and delivering new customer experiences at scale.

Business Banking Technology executes the technology strategy across Business Banking through the application of modern technology, resilient platforms and engineering excellence to deliver valuable customer outcomes at speed and scale.

You'll join the Payments & Acceptance domain, a growing engineering organisation of more than 60 engineers responsible for critical eCommerce capabilities including:

  • Merchant onboarding and activation

  • Payment transaction processing

  • Settlement and reconciliation services

  • eCommerce platform services

  • Customer-facing merchant experiences

With multiple strategic capabilities being launched throughout the year, you'll play a key role in shaping the architecture, engineering practices and customer outcomes of a platform that is still being built.

What you'll do

  • Lead the design and delivery of scalable, resilient and secure software solutions across our eCommerce payments platform

  • Build and evolve Java-based microservices supporting merchant onboarding, payment processing and settlement capabilities

  • Contribute across the technology stack, from backend services and APIs through to cloud infrastructure and customer experiences

  • Drive architectural decisions and influence engineering direction across squads

  • Champion engineering excellence through automated testing, CI/CD, observability and DevSecOps practices

  • Partner with product, architecture and business stakeholders to deliver meaningful customer outcomes

  • Mentor engineers and uplift technical capability across the team

  • Support production systems and continuously improve reliability, performance and operational excellence

Bring deep software engineering expertise and a passion for building scalable, customer-focused platforms. You'll be comfortable leading complex technical initiatives while remaining hands-on and close to delivery.

We're particularly interested in people who have:

  • Proven experience designing and delivering complex distributed systems at scale

  • Strong hands-on software engineering capability and a passion for solving challenging technical problems

  • Experience building microservices architectures within cloud-native environments

  • Strong architectural and systems design skills

  • A track record of mentoring engineers and influencing technical decision-making

  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills

  • The ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on engineering delivery

  • A growth mindset and curiosity for emerging technologies and engineering practices
