Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack Tech Lead- Nodejs & Nextjs)

We're modernising our web technology stack, reimagining customer journeys, and implementing industry-leading standards for observability, scalability, and performance across our Business Banking platform.As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll be the technical lead for our foundational full stack squad, responsible for driving the capabilities of our Business Banking web monorepo while mentoring and educating other squads in front-end best practices and patterns.
This is a high-impact role where you'll combine technical leadership with hands-on engineering, mentoring, and cross-squad influence.
What you'll do• Be the tech lead for the foundational full stack squad driving the capabilities and scalability of the Business Banking web monorepo
• Act as the front-end, back-end authority and lead mentor, responsible for teaching and guiding other squads in best practices, standards, and reusable patterns using Node.js, Next.js, TypeScript, React, and modern state management techniques
• Shape and evolve the core shared components, libraries, and utilities within the monorepo, ensuring a robust and consistent front-end architecture
• Champion technical excellence through active participation in architectural discussions, rigorous code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and senior leaders to align front-end solutions with wider business and technical goals
• Mentor engineers across the squad, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and collaboration to elevate overall technical competence
• Embed DevOps practices, observability, quality engineering, and secure-by-design principles throughout the front-end development lifecycle
• Drive the pragmatic integration of AI-driven workflows at the front end, enhancing user experiences and operational efficiency
Tech Stack & EnvironmentFront-end focus:
- Next.js
- TypeScript
- React
- State management (Redux or similar)
- Modern UI/UX patterns
Back-end & Platform:
- Node.js
- AWS (Azure/GCP experience also welcome)
- CI/CD (GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus or similar)
- Observability & security tooling (logging, monitoring, Snyk, SonarQube, etc.)
AI & Modern Engineering:
- Desirable: Experience integrating AI/LLMs into applications
- Desirable: Familiarity with tools like LangChain, LlamaIndex or similar
- Strong user-centric thinking around AI-driven workflows
- Comfortable leveraging AI coding tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude, RooCode etc.)
- Proven experience operating at Staff Engineer level or equivalent senior technical leadership
- Deep expertise in full stack engineering with Node,js, Next.js, TypeScript, and React
- Strong track record of leading and mentoring engineering teams
- Experience with monorepo architecture and scaling front-end systems
- Outstanding communication skills with the ability to teach and influence across teams
- Passion for engineering excellence, clean architecture, and continuous improvement
- You'll be the tech lead for a foundational full stack squad at one of Australia's largest banks
- You'll shape the architecture that other squads will build upon
- You'll mentor and educate teams across the organization
- You'll work with a modern tech stack and real-world AI integration
- You'll help define the future of Business Banking technology at CBA
