Job Title: Software Engineer

Location: Melbourne - Hybrid

Salary: $105,000 - $120,000 + superannuation

Kaluza reimagines energy to bring net-zero within everyone’s reach. Our intelligent Platform enables energy utilities to unlock the full value of a radically changing energy system and propel us to a future where renewable energy is sustainable, affordable and accessible for all.

From automating and simplifying core operations including billing to create a lower-cost, higher-engagement experience, to optimising energy usage across smart devices in the home, we turn tough challenges into win-win-win outcomes for customers, suppliers and the energy system.

We champion a flexible, hybrid work approach and we find that teams often benefit from coming together in the office at least 2-3 days a week to foster connection and accelerate progress.

Outside of these collaborative opportunities, we aim to be as flexible as possible to balance work with life. As a company we come together annually for our conference and end of year celebrations!

Our goal is to build a self-sufficient and empowered team here on the ground in Australia. We’re well on our way, but until we get there we still have some reliances on our UK team. Being comfortable working flexibly for a portion of your working week to cover time zones is required.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

You'll be joining the Kaluza Technology community. We’re a large team of both data-led and product focused Software and Production Engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness and by ensuring best practices across the board of the community.

You’ll be working on the Kaluza’s Energy Retail platform. This is a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. This platform is built with scale and technical quality in mind and is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza’s customers.

Here at Kaluza we are 100% committed to providing a reliable platform for our clients. As part of that commitment, our engineering ownership model is “you build it, you own it.”  Our engineering teams have a high sense of ownership and support their critical services both in and out of normal working hours. After hours support is assigned according to a paid roster.

What will I be doing?

We very much believe in sharing both responsibilities and the successes in our team, so you’ll be exposed to many aspects of our portfolio of work from the get go.  Our teams build, test, deploy and support a range of services that manage the customer lifecycle and metering data for use across the Kaluza platform, with a diverse set of underlying technologies.  We don’t expect you to arrive with experience of all of them, but you can expect to learn about and get hands-on with typically TypeScript development, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Kubernetes, Serverless, Dynamo or Postgres, AWS and DataDog.  As a team, we currently follow agile approaches to development, making use of tools like Miro, Confluence and Jira for workshops, documentation, task management, etc.

You’ll be involved in the full lifecycle from rapid prototyping to helping us scope our work and backlog refinement to developing, configuring and deploying services, to monitoring and improving our operational health. You will join our support rota to triage platform issues and respond to incidents; Kaluza itself has a great learning culture, so you can also expect to be dedicating some of your time to active learning and development.

There are several interesting challenges to solve including:

  • How to abstract and reduce complexity across multiple clients and countries
  • Scale systems to process millions of data points through complex processes
  • Build extensible systems that allow for customisability

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you’ll have/be

  • You are genuinely passionate about developing products that will positively impact millions of people and also our environment
  • You love working in teams and collaboratively building features that impact customers
  • You are motivated by owning products, from inception to continuous improvement
  • You believe strongly in test automation, continuous delivery and working with best agile practices
  • You love building scalable, resilient and observable solutions
  • You seek learning opportunities to deepen your expertise or broaden your knowledge
  • You’re an experienced hands-on engineer with expertise in Typescript - if your experience doesn't match our stack exactly then don't worry, we hire based on software engineering talent, not language-specific skillset.
  • You have built or contributed to a variety of systems, ideally in different technologies
  • Knowledge of the best engineering practices and continuous delivery
  • You have experience building highly performant applications

Kaluza Values

Here at Kaluza we have five core values that guide our business:

Play to win, Solve the real problem, Build trust every day, Own the outcome, Go further together

From us you’ll get

Currently, from day one, you will get:

  • Progressive leave policies - including leave dedicated to the moments that matter to you the most
  • Annual discretionary bonus
  • Dedicated personal learning and home office budgets
  • Flexible working — 2-3 days in our CBD Melbourne (WeWork) office
  • 26 days holiday
  • Novated Leasing
  • Purchase Leave

We want the best people

We’re keen to meet people from all walks of life — our view is that the more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. We want to build teams which represent a variety of experiences, perspectives and skills, and we recognise talent on the basis of merit and potential.

We understand some people may not apply for jobs unless they tick every box. But if you're excited about joining us and think you have some of what we're looking for, even if you're not 100% sure, we'd still love to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
