Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a talented, experienced UI designer to join Luminary for a 9 month parental leave contract with the potential to extend to 12 months.

Luminary specialises in digital transformations, from researching user behaviour to the continual optimisation of the new experiences. We need someone to join the team who is passionate about their craft, an excellent presenter of work and can connect into our agency processes and shape the way we collaborate with our teams.

Role Responsibilities
  • Creating design systems: Building and maintaining scalable design systems using a component-based approach.
  • Advocating for accessibility: Designing with the WCAG guidelines in mind to ensure experiences are inclusive for users with visual, auditory, cognitive, or physical differences.
  • Design for responsive & mobile-first: Executing designs that adapt seamlessly across a variety of devices, screen sizes, and orientations.
  • Digital branding: Consulting on brand guidelines and extending them sustainably into digital interfaces.
  • Design QA: "Sweating the details" by reviewing features during the development sprint to ensure the final build matches the intended design.
  • Integrated research: Translating insights from user behaviour research into visual executions that meet both user needs and client objectives.
  • Agile & design thinking: Working within iterative sprints and a design thinking framework to refine and test concepts
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: Maintaining constant collaboration with strategy, UX, content, and technical teams
  • Client facing: Facilitating frequent touchpoints to keep the client central to every part of the design process.
  • Feedback culture: Promoting a culture of curiosity and actively participating in ongoing feedback loops.
  • Strategic decision-making: Balancing the "desirable" for the user with the "viable" for the client to ensure a high return on design investment.

Experience required

We are looking for someone with:

  • 6+ years' experience working in a digital design position, preferably as a UI Designer
  • A portfolio that showcases sophisticated aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong practical experience working with market-leading UI design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite etc.
  • Strong practical experience creating and maintaining design system frameworks, accessibility standards and design principles
  • Strong storytelling and presentation techniques from workshop facilitation to narrative-driven prototyping
  • Experience of working in an Agile/Scrum development process
  • Strong practical experience supporting development teams and also an understanding of the latest front-end development standards
  • Experience working with market-leading DXPs and CMSs
  • A collaborative spirit that thrives in fast-paced, cross-functional environments

Submission Tips

Luminary receives a high volume of applications. We know everyone hates writing a cover letter but we have asked for this so you can tell us about yourself in a way you can’t in your CV. It’s not compulsory this time so you can opt to do this or not but we would like to hear more about your favourite examples of great design. Using AI to assist you to complete this is fine, but ensure that you make the letter your own.

We also need a link to your portfolio so please include this on your CV when applying.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

One of Luminary's core values is People and we are committed to developing a workforce that embraces all aspects of diversity and work hard to ensure we’re a welcoming organisation that prioritises equality, inclusion and a sense of belonging for all our staff. What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
