Senior Technical Business Analyst
The Senior Technical Business Analyst bridges the gap between business stakeholders and engineering teams. They are responsible for identifying, documenting, and communicating project requirements across business, technology, and user dimensions. They have a strong emphasis on technical depth across digital delivery contexts including APIs, mobile applications, front-end platforms, and software engineering practices.
The Senior Technical BA works fluidly within agile delivery teams, understanding how software is designed, built, tested, and deployed. They bring enough technical fluency to engage credibly with engineers, QA teams, and architects, and enough business acumen to translate complex technical constraints into clear, actionable outcomes for customers and stakeholders.
Areas of Primary Responsibility
- Serve as the key interface between customers/stakeholders and engineering teams, translating business needs into clear technical requirements.
- Build and maintain trusted customer relationships through discovery, delivery, and ongoing improvement.
- Lead and facilitate workshops, discovery sessions, and requirement reviews with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Elicit, analyse, and document user, business, technology, and stakeholder requirements; confirm scope and expected outcomes.
- Create and maintain delivery artefacts including epics, user stories, acceptance criteria, process maps, data flows, and integration/API documentation.
- Ensure backlog items are well-formed, prioritised, estimated, and "ready" for engineering with minimal ambiguity.
- Set up and maintain documentation aligned to Versent/client standards, templates, and best practices.
- Partner with engineers and architects to understand solution options, evaluate trade-offs, and validate feasibility.
- Communicate and clarify API contracts (REST/GraphQL), request/response patterns, authentication, and integration dependencies.
- Collaborate with front-end and mobile teams, considering UI behaviour, state, platform constraints (iOS/Android), and UX impacts on requirements.
- Capture functional and non-functional requirements (performance, security, scalability, reliability) and ensure they are traceable through delivery.
- Actively participate in agile ceremonies (planning, stand-ups, refinement, showcases, retrospectives) and contribute to delivery cadence.
- Manage the product backlog in Jira (story/epic structure, linking/labelling, boards, and reporting) to support delivery transparency.
- Work with QA to ensure requirements are testable; write acceptance criteria suitable for BDD/Gherkin and support defect triage.
- Identify, track, and escalate risks, issues, dependencies, and scope gaps early; align requirements to customer strategy and business goals.
Skills & Experience
Required
- 5+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, with at least 2 years in a technically complex digital delivery environment.
- Jira proficiency: hands-on experience managing backlogs, epics, sprints, custom fields, dashboards, and reporting in Jira Software.
- API literacy: ability to read and interpret REST API documentation, Swagger/OpenAPI specs, and understand request/response patterns, HTTP methods, status codes, and authentication (OAuth, API keys).
- Mobile application familiarity: experience delivering requirements for native iOS/Android or cross-platform mobile apps (React Native, Flutter, or similar), with awareness of platform-specific constraints.
- Front-end framework awareness: familiarity with modern front-end frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, or similar) and the ability to engage with front-end engineers on component behaviour, state, and UI logic.
- Dev team fluency: demonstrated experience working embedded within agile engineering squads, contributing to ceremonies, and understanding the software development lifecycle end-to-end.
- QA automation understanding: ability to write testable acceptance criteria (ideally in BDD/Gherkin) and collaborate with QA automation engineers on test coverage and defect management.
- Strong skills in user story writing, process mapping, gap analysis, and requirements documentation.
- Experience with stakeholder management across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Confident communicator: able to explain technical concepts to business stakeholders and business context to engineers.
Desirable
- Exposure to cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and understanding of cloud-native application patterns.
- Experience with Confluence, Miro, Figma (review/comment), or similar collaboration tools.
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, or AWS CodePipeline.
- Experience in professional services or consulting environments.
- Exposure to security and identity requirements (IAM, SSO, MFA, data privacy).
- Knowledge of integration patterns (event-driven, pub/sub, message queues).
- Agile certifications (CSM, CSPO, SAFe) or BA certifications (IIBA CBAP/CCBA).
