Engineer and improve mainframe application lifecycle, source control, build, promotion, and deployment platforms. Integrate Broadcom Endeavor with Git, CI/CD, APIs, and automation while maintaining secure production controls. Automate builds and deployments across COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, and JCL environments; troubleshoot complex delivery issues; and strengthen traceability, reproducibility, rollback, auditability, and release integrity across development, test, and production.

  • Own and improve the engineering platforms and controls that safely move critical mainframe applications from source code to production.
  • Shape how established mainframe SCM practices connect with Git, CI/CD, APIs and automation.
  • Build your engineering capability while helping modernise secure, resilient software delivery at CommBank.

Do Work That Matters

Technology plays an important role in enabling CommBank’s purpose and ambitions, with a focus on modern, future-ready technology and improving resilience, reliability and recoverability.

As a Mainframe Systems Engineer, you’ll engineer and continuously improve the platforms, tooling and processes that manage application source code, builds and deployment across enterprise mainframe environments. Your focus will be making software delivery controlled, repeatable, traceable and increasingly automated, while maintaining the production safeguards critical applications depend on.

You’ll bring together established mainframe practices and modern software engineering, finding practical ways to integrate technologies such as Endeavor with Git, CI/CD, APIs and automation.

See yourself in our team

You’ll work closely with application development, platform engineering, testing and operations teams to improve the path from source code through build, validation and production deployment.

This role sits naturally within CommBank’s refreshed Systems Engineering capability, which specifically recognises System and Application Engineering roles that do not closely align with Software or Platform Engineering and provides a dedicated skills framework for them.

 You will:

  • Engineer, administer and enhance mainframe application lifecycle and deployment platforms, including Broadcom Endeavor or equivalent SCM technology.
  • Design and maintain source, build, promotion and deployment pathways, including environments, stages, approvals and release controls.
  • Engineer automated build, packaging and deployment processes across technologies including COBOL, PL/I, Assembler and JCL.
  • Improve Endeavor processors, exits and integrations with enterprise engineering tooling.
  • Diagnose complex build, promotion and deployment issues across development, test and production environments.
  • Strengthen release integrity through versioning, traceability, reproducible builds, deployment evidence, rollback capability and audit controls.
  • Reduce manual activity through APIs, scripting and automation, while integrating established SCM controls with Git and CI/CD.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify and modernise legacy delivery practices without compromising resilience or production control.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

Are an engineer, understands that application deployment is much more than moving code. You think across the full software lifecycle and care about build integrity, quality, traceability and reliable production outcomes.

Experience across several of the following will help you succeed:

  • Strong mainframe foundations across IBM z/OS, JCL, TSO/E, ISPF, JES2/SDSF, data sets and USS.
  • Experience with Broadcom Endeavor or comparable mainframe SCM, application lifecycle or deployment technology.
  • Understanding of application build and release processes, including compilers, binders/link-editors, packaging, promotion, deployment and recovery.
  • Exposure to Db2, CICS, IMS, MQ or RACF, or similar enterprise mainframe environments.
  • Capability in automation using Python, REXX, shell scripting, APIs or CLI-based tooling.
  • Exposure to modern engineering approaches such as Git, CI/CD, Zowe, z/OSMF, automated testing and quality gates.
  • A methodical approach to troubleshooting complex build and deployment problems, alongside a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to collaborate across development, testing, infrastructure and operations while balancing delivery speed with strong production controls.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
