The Role
We are seeking a highly capable Senior Infrastructure Engineer to play a key role in the delivery, stability, and continuous improvement of our IT infrastructure across cloud and on‑premises environments. This role sits between Infrastructure Engineer and Infrastructure Architect and is designed for an experienced engineer who combines deep hands‑on technical expertise with growing architectural awareness and leadership capability.
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer will operate as a senior technical escalation point, be involved in complex operational tasks and projects, and contribute to low‑level design and architectural discussions, while remaining primarily delivery‑focused. This role also includes mentoring junior engineers and driving best practice across infrastructure operations.
Responsibilities
- Act as a senior technical authority and Tier 3 escalation point across cloud, infrastructure, endpoint, and VDI platforms.
- Maintain resilient infrastructure solutions across Microsoft Azure and on‑premises environments.
- Assist the Architects in leading the deployment, optimisation, and operational ownership of Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and VDI environments.
- Own the day‑to‑day technical management of Azure resources including VMs, networking, storage, backup, and monitoring.
- Contribute to low‑level infrastructure architecture, technical designs, and documentation in collaboration with Infrastructure Architects.
- Administer and optimise Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, Entra ID, and access controls.
- Lead device management and security using Microsoft Intune, including compliance policies, configuration profiles, and application lifecycle management.
- Design, maintain, and optimise Windows Server environments (on‑prem and cloud), including patching, hardening, availability, and performance.
- Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, identity services, and authentication platforms.
- Identify opportunities for optimisation, standardisation, and modernisation across infrastructure platforms.
- Develop and maintain clear operational documentation, standards, and runbooks.
- Drive automation and scripting initiatives using PowerShell and other tooling to improve reliability and efficiency.
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and peer review for Infrastructure Engineers.
- Collaborate closely with Infrastructure Architects, Development teams, Cyber Security, and external vendors to deliver stable and secure platforms.
Basic requirements
- These are essential to perform effectively as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer:
- 4+ years’ experience in an infrastructure, systems engineering, or cloud engineering role
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including:
- Virtual Machines
- VNets, NSGs, routing
- Storage
- Backup and monitoring
- Proven experience supporting and operating Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) or an enterprise VDI platform
- In-depth knowledge of Windows Server environments (on-prem and cloud)
- Strong experience managing Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP
- Strong experience administering Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, including identity and access controls
- Hands-on experience managing endpoints using Microsoft Intune / MDM
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including:
- VLANs
- VPNs
- Firewalls
- Hybrid networking concepts
- Experience supporting backup and recovery solutions
- Strong PowerShell scripting and automation capability
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a wider technical team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation
Preferred requirements
- Experience working with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and supporting security incident response
- Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server in production environments
- Exposure to low-level infrastructure design and contributing to architectural discussions
- Experience standardising, modernising, or optimising infrastructure platforms
- Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to junior engineers
- Experience working closely with Cyber Security teams and external vendors
- Familiarity with availability, resilience, and performance optimisation patterns
- Experience developing operational standards, runbooks, and best-practice documentation
