At Guzman y Gomez Mexican Kitchen, our mission has always been to reinvent fast-food. We’re Australia’s only fast-food restaurant to be 100% clean, meaning there are no added preservatives, artificial flavours, added colours or unacceptable additives in our food. We’re incredibly proud of our amazing people, and the unique way we celebrate Mexican culture in everything we do.
Job DescriptionThe Role
GYG's entire data platform runs through Enterprise Systems, powering the sales, operations, and people reporting that leadership relies on every day.
The Senior Data Engineer designs and builds that platform end-to-end — from ingestion pipelines through to the governed, AI-ready data products that power Power BI and self-serve analytics across the business.
What You'll Do
- Design and build ingestion pipelines in Microsoft Fabric, migrating our SQL Server data warehouse to a governed medallion architecture (bronze → silver → gold → platinum)
- Own solution design end-to-end — architecture, source mappings, transformation logic, and data lineage — without needing a detailed technical brief
- Integrate new data sources from REST APIs, MySQL, and PostgreSQL on AWS, using CDC and batch ingestion patterns
- Design and own enterprise Power BI semantic models as governed, reusable data products, with DAX at depth
- Build the data foundations for our insight intelligence layer, including Real-Time Intelligence and future AI/Copilot integration
- Define and enforce data engineering standards — naming conventions, layer contracts, testing, and documentation — across the platform
- Implement data quality controls and pipeline reliability standards the platform can scale on
- Challenge requirements and propose alternatives when the data approach doesn't stack up
What You'll Bring
- Significant (e.g. 6+ years) of hands-on data engineering experience in production environments — pipelines, modelling, and serving layer
- Proven ability to design and deliver end-to-end data solutions from a business problem statement, without a detailed technical brief
- Operational experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Dataflows Gen2, Direct Lake, OneLake) or deep equivalent experience on Synapse/Databricks
- Strong T-SQL and dimensional modelling, with experience migrating a SQL Server warehouse to a cloud lakehouse
- CDC and batch extraction experience from MySQL/PostgreSQL on AWS RDS into an Azure environment
- Power BI and DAX at depth — semantic model engineering, not just report building
- A disposition that owns problems through to production without hand-holding, and pushes back when the data approach is wrong
- dbt, Great Expectations, or similar data quality/transformation frameworks highly regarded but not essential
What You'll Love
- Real career growth in a Tech function that's investing in its capability
- Annual short-term incentive scheme
- GYG restricted shares, earned each year through our long-term incentive scheme
- Up to 5 weeks of annual leave each year (ask us how)
- Paid parental leave
- A vibrant Surry Hills office, a short walk from Central Station (4 days in office, 1 day WFH)
