  • Shape software platforms and engineering tooling that help engineers build and deliver at scale
  • Lead complex engineering across CI/CD, developer tooling, automation, security and software delivery
  • Be part of CommBank’s continued investment in modern, AI-powered engineering and platform capability

Do Work That Matters

CommBank is investing in world-class engineering capability, with a focus on AI-powered engineering, platforms built through code and clear delivery guardrails.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you’ll apply deep software engineering expertise to the platforms, tooling and capabilities used by other engineers. Your work will help reduce friction in software delivery, strengthen engineering standards and enable teams to build and release software safely at scale.

The role has a strong focus on developer platforms and enterprise CI/CD capabilities that simplify and automate the path from code to production.

See yourself in our team

Our Engineering Pathways team is focused on building and evolving software-based engineering platforms that enable engineers across CommBank to deliver software faster, safer and more effectively.

Our engineering ecosystem spans developer platforms, source code management, CI/CD, automation, security tooling, testing and artefact management. We work closely with engineering teams across the organisation, co-building solutions that can operate effectively at enterprise scale.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership across software-based engineering platforms and developer tooling, bringing solutions together around better outcomes for engineers
  • Design, build and evolve scalable capabilities that improve how engineers develop, integrate and deliver software
  • Contribute deeply to CI/CD and engineering tooling across areas such as source control, automation, testing and artefact management
  • Build and evolve automated delivery capabilities that make it easier for engineers to move safely and efficiently from code to production
  • Work closely with engineers across different areas of CommBank, using co-building and inner-source approaches to develop solutions at enterprise scale
  • Bring strong engineering judgement to architecture, automation, controls, standards, reliability and security
  • Solve complex technical problems and balance engineering trade-offs to deliver sustainable solutions
  • Provide technical direction and help lift engineering capability through collaboration, mentoring and pragmatic technical leadership
  • We’re interested in hearing from people who:
  • You’re an accomplished software engineer who has built platforms, developer tooling or engineering capabilities for other engineers, ideally at significant scale. You combine strong hands-on engineering depth with the ability to set technical direction, influence across teams and continually develop your expertise as technologies and engineering practices evolve.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • Significant hands-on software engineering experience, including strong programming capability and experience designing and building complex software systems
  • Experience building engineering platforms, developer tooling or capabilities consumed by engineering teams at scale
  • Strong knowledge of modern CI/CD and software delivery practices, with experience across areas such as GitHub, pipeline automation, source control, testing, security tooling or artefact management
  • Experience integrating engineering tooling with cloud environments. AWS, Azure or GCP experience can all be relevant where your experience is centred on software engineering and engineering tooling
  • An understanding of secure software delivery practices, controls and compliance within complex technology environments
  • Experience of AI powered engineering practices and how agentic capabilities are enabling opportunities to improve software delivery at scale.
  • The ability to operate across technical boundaries, solve ambiguous problems and influence engineering decisions beyond a single squad
  • A strong learning mindset, with evidence of successfully moving into new technical areas, developing expertise and delivering outcomes
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to provide technical guidance and influence engineers and stakeholders across an organisation

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
