As a Principal Software Engineer - Digital Customer Journey, you'll be at the forefront of transforming how Australian businesses access lending through digital-first, AI-enabled experiences. Working within Digital & Assisted Lending and reporting to the Crew Tech Lead, you'll provide technical leadership across some of the Bank’s most critical customer journeys, powering experiences across NetBank, the CommBank App, and self-service lending channels. You'll help shape the technology vision, architecture, and engineering standards that underpin a large-scale, multi-year Business Lending Modernisation Program, solving complex challenges that have a direct impact on how customers engage with our products and services. This is an opportunity to influence the future of digital lending while building innovative, scalable solutions that deliver exceptional customer outcomes.

Join the Digital & Assisted Lending Crew within Business Banking Technology, where we're reimagining how Australian businesses access lending. Our team sits at the heart of a major multi-year Business Lending Modernisation Program, delivering digital-first, AI-enabled lending experiences across NetBank, Mobile Banking and self-service channels. We solve complex engineering challenges to create faster, smarter and more personalised customer journeys, helping business customers access the funding they need with greater speed, transparency and confidence.

As part of this team, you'll help build scalable, cloud-native platforms that support millions of customer interactions every year. Working alongside talented engineers, architects, product specialists and business leaders, you'll shape the future of business lending through innovative technology, modern engineering practices and customer-centric design. The solutions we deliver have a direct impact on businesses across Australia, powering growth, supporting investment and helping communities thrive. We’re interested in hearing from people who: 

  • Bring proven Principal Engineer or Technical Leadership experience, owning end-to-end engineering outcomes across complex, customer-facing digital platforms at scale.

  • Remain deeply hands-on across architecture, design, coding, troubleshooting and production optimisation, with expertise in modern .NET Core and C# development.

  • Have strong full-stack capability across React, Next.js and API-driven ecosystems, delivering secure, accessible and high-performing customer experiences.

  • Demonstrate deep expertise designing cloud-native solutions on AWS, leveraging microservices, event-driven architecture, domain-driven design and distributed systems patterns.

  • Champion engineering excellence through DevSecOps, CI/CD automation, infrastructure as code, automated testing and modern software delivery practices.

  • Build and operate highly resilient, observable and scalable platforms using technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch and related monitoring frameworks.

  • Have a track record of modernising platforms, reducing technical debt and simplifying complex customer journeys while improving delivery velocity and business outcomes.

  • Embrace AI-powered software engineering, applying tools such as GitHub Copilot, Codex, Cursor and AI-enabled SDLC practices to enhance developer productivity and quality.

  • Influence technical strategy across multiple teams, mentoring senior engineers and partnering with Product, Design and Business stakeholders to shape long-term technology direction.

Tech skills 

We don't expect you to know everything, but experience in several of the following will set you up for success:

  • Front End: Next.js, React, Customer Experience Engineering

  • Back End: .NET Core, C#, ASP.NET Core, Microservices Architecture, Event-Driven Services

  • APIs & Integration: GraphQL, REST APIs

  • Cloud: AWS Cloud-Native Services, AWS Lambda, S3, CloudFormation, Serverless Architecture

  • Architecture: Domain-Driven Design (DDD), Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Distributed Systems, Event-Driven Architecture

  • Containerisation: Kubernetes, Docker, Service Mesh

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Terraform, AWS CloudFormation

  • DevOps: GitHub, GitHub Actions

  • Security: Secure SDLC, SonarQube, Snyk, OWASP Security Controls

  • Testing: TDD, unit, integration, API testing

  • Quality Tools: JMeter, Selenium, Postman

  • Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Datadog

  • AI Tooling/Practices: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Harness Engineering, Spec driven Development

  • Database such as Oracle, PostgresSQL , AWS Aurora
