Patent Attorney, Mechanical Engineering

Your role

You'll be a part of our Patent & Trade Mark (PTA) team and will work closely with our Partners and the wider team, gaining exposure to some of the most complex and interesting matters in the market. As a Patent Attorney you will work directly with a range of local and international clients, offering a broad range of services, including:

  • Providing the full scope of patent services to local innovators and international clients, including drafting and prosecuting applications in Australia and globally, managing various IP portfolios, and handling patent oppositions.
  • Conducting freedom to operate searches and providing related advice.
  • Delivering validity and infringement opinions.
  • Assisting Allens' IP practice in the delivery of a broad range of legal and commercial services, particularly in patent litigation matters where patent attorney input is critical.
  • Developing effective strategies to protect and commercialise clients' inventions.
  • Assisting in the continued growth of the practice through our clearly defined and targeted Business Development initiatives.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity. Hybrid working (60% in the office) is how we work however flexibility matters at Allens, so if you are seeking hybrid working or are looking for flexibility in your work, we would be happy to discuss what arrangements would work best for you.

About you

You will have:

  • Experience from a reputable law or patent attorney firm, or an in-house position.
  • An Engineering background with experience working in the mechanical field capability in the electrical, physics and/or ICT fields is desirable.
  • Experience in drafting and prosecuting patents in the area of Engineering.
  • Post-graduate qualifications and research or industry experience in your chosen field.
  • An ability to effectively manage larger matters.
  • A willingness to participate in business development activities, such as pitch documents, firm-wide pursuits, article writing, attending industry events and hosting seminars.
  • A willingness to build an understanding of clients and develop effective working relationships. 
  • Outstanding communication skills, written and verbal.
  • A desire to learn, grow, network, mentor others.
