This is a rare opportunity to own the strategy, investment, roadmap, and lifecycle of a large-scale enterprise mainframe environment supporting mission-critical business services. You will balance operational excellence with modernisation, leading the platform through optimisation, transformation, and ultimately defining its future role within the broader technology landscape.

Working with senior business and technology leaders, architects, application owners, vendors, and managed service partners, you will drive decisions that improve resilience, reduce complexity, optimise cost, and deliver long-term business value.

Our Perks & Benefits:

  • Work-life integration - we understand life happens when you're busy making other plans, so we offer flexibility around where, and when you work
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for primary and secondary carers
  • Professional development program
  • An epic (free) Telstra mobile phone plan
  • Laptop/Device allowance renewed every 2 years
  • Purchased Annual Leave scheme
  • Discounted Telstra products and services

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Defining and executing the multi-year vision, strategy, and roadmap for the Mainframe platform
  • Owning platform outcomes including availability, security, resilience, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Leading investment decisions, business cases, and prioritisation of modernisation initiatives
  • Driving simplification, application migration, cloud transition, consolidation, and legacy transformation programs
  • Managing strategic vendor and service provider relationships
  • Balancing business needs, risk, technical debt, operational resilience, and commercial outcomes
  • Influencing senior stakeholders across business and technology to align priorities and achieve measurable outcomes

What We're Looking For

  • Significant experience leading large enterprise Mainframe platform, Infrastructure, or Technology Platform portfolios
  • Strong knowledge of modern mainframe environments including z/OS, CICS, DB2, IMS, MQ, RACF, storage, and batch processing
  • Experience defining product strategy, roadmaps, investment plans, and technology transformation programs
  • Proven success delivering Mainframe modernisation, migration, consolidation, or decommissioning initiatives at scale.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience managing budgets, vendor contracts, software licensing, and business cases
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and executive communication skills

Why This Role?

  • Own the full lifecycle of a platform that underpins critical enterprise services.
  • Influence strategic technology decisions for Telstra cloud group.
  • Lead a significant modernisation and simplification agenda.
  • Work across large-scale transformation, resilience, cloud, and legacy exit initiatives.
  • Shape the future of one of the most complex and business-critical technology ecosystems in the organisation

If you're a strategic mainframe leader who enjoys combining platform ownership, modernisation, commercial management, and technology strategy, we'd love to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
