Help build connected technology that is changing the way farmers manage livestock

What if the IoT systems you engineered didn't just live in the cloud or a lab, but operated out in the real world?

At eShepherd, we're building connected technology for agriculture, and we're looking for an IoT Engineer to help develop the systems that connect devices, data and applications.

You'll work across the full IoT ecosystem, from device connectivity and data collection through to cloud services and APIs, helping us build secure, scalable and reliable solutions.

If you enjoy solving complicated technical problems, working across hardware and software, and seeing technology you've helped create come to life, this could be a brilliant next move.

Why this role?

This isn't an IoT role where you'll work on one small piece of a much bigger system.

You'll have the opportunity to work across device connectivity, embedded technology, cloud platforms, APIs, data processing, security and system reliability, collaborating with engineering and product teams to create connected solutions from concept through to deployment.

You'll also help investigate complex IoT problems, improve system performance and explore emerging technology that could strengthen future products.

What you'll be doing

You'll:

  • Design and develop end-to-end IoT solutions connecting devices, data, cloud services and APIs

  • Work closely with hardware and software engineers to integrate IoT components into products

  • Build secure, scalable IoT architectures

  • Implement IoT communication protocols and standards

  • Develop data processing and analytics pipelines

  • Test, debug and troubleshoot complex IoT systems

  • Help improve reliability and performance

  • Evaluate new hardware, software and emerging IoT technologies

  • Contribute to technical documentation, code reviews and knowledge sharing.

What you'll bring

We're looking for someone with proven IoT development experience who understands how the different layers of a connected product come together.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics Engineering or a related discipline

  • Experience designing and developing IoT applications from concept through to deployment

  • Strong programming capability in languages such as Python, C, JavaScript or Bash

  • Knowledge of technologies and protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, LoRaWAN, cellular IoT and edge computing

  • Experience with AWS, Azure or Google Cloud

  • Strong Linux capability

  • Knowledge of networking, security protocols and data encryption

  • Experience with sensors, actuators, microcontrollers and embedded systems

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Experience with LoRa gateways, data analytics, machine learning or data visualisation would be an added bonus.

Benefits we offer
  • Competitive salary + performance-based incentives

  • Career growth opportunities as eShepherd continues to scale globally

  • Modern tools and technology to help you succeed

  • Supportive, collaborative team culture

  • Modern Melbourne office with great amenities + easy transport links

  • Employee Assistance Programme

  • Quarterly team lunches + regular team celebrations

  • Free office snacks

  • Occasional pancake breakfasts

  • Opportunity to work on products with genuine global impact

Ready to build something meaningful?

If you're an engineer who loves understanding how things connect, why they fail and how they can work better, we'd love to hear from you.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and the role may be filled before the closing date.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
