About the Team/Role

You'll lead a dynamic engineering team within our modern payments platform that currently services our corporate payments line of business, with aspirations to expand across all our lines of business. Your team will drive innovation by building new features on our event-driven, microservices-based architecture deployed in Kubernetes clusters. You'll be working with cutting-edge technologies including containerized applications, event streaming with Kafka, infrastructure-as-code through Terraform, and implementing CI/CD pipelines that enable true continuous delivery.

As Engineering Manager of a high-performing Scrum team, you'll tackle complex data engineering challenges, processing millions of transactions daily through a cloud-native platform that ensures accuracy, security, and exceptional performance. Your team will design scalable solutions that handle massive data volumes while maintaining aggressive uptime SLAs. Your team's work directly impacts WEX's ability to process payments reliably and securely at scale, with opportunities to shape the future architecture of our entire payments ecosystem through technological innovation and forward-thinking design patterns.

How you'll make an impact
  • Serve as a Culture Champion who embodies and promotes WEX's values, creates an inclusive environment, and builds team cohesion and engagement

  • Drive technical vision and roadmap for your team's services, providing strong technical leadership while remaining hands-on with code

  • Write high-quality, production-ready code alongside your team, keeping your technical skills sharp while mentoring others

  • Lead by example through pair programming, code reviews, and technical spikes to solve complex engineering challenges

  • Manage a cross-functional Scrum team of 5 Engineers, supporting their professional development

  • Implement advanced architectural patterns like event sourcing, CQRS, and distributed tracing to build resilient, performant systems

  • Partner with Product teams and stakeholders to define and deliver roadmaps that delight customers, enable business growth, and ensure technical excellence

  • Maintain sustainable delivery practices while balancing the needs of your team, stakeholders, and the platform services you own

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives to enhance delivery capabilities, technical processes, and operational assets

  • Advocate for technical, delivery and operational best practices with a focus on measurable outcomes and meaningful metrics

  • Own and solve complex delivery, technical and operational challenges, providing guidance while empowering your team's independence

  • Collaborate effectively across the organization with other Scrum teams and service providers to deliver changes efficiently, securely and safely

  • Excel at both building software systems and developing people, supporting their career growth

  • Demonstrate a collaborative and enabling leadership style

Experience you'll bring
  • 10+ years of software development experience

  • 2+ years of experience leading software engineering teams

  • Proven success record managing engineering teams

  • Strong technical leadership with demonstrable achievements in architecture, solution design, development, and scaled cloud delivery

  • Deep expertise in modern software engineering practices, cloud platforms, and DevOps approaches including test and deployment automation. A deep understanding on how to build Data Intensive applications at scale (preferred)

  • Excellent stakeholder management and people leadership skills

  • Track record of building positive team cultures that emphasize collaboration, growth, and excellence

  • Experience with financial or payment systems (preferred)

  • Knowledge of modern microservice architectures and distributed systems (preferred)

Technology Stack
  • Experience with .NET/C# and Typescript

  • Cloud-native development experience including Kubernetes, Terraform, Terragrunt, Containerisation, Event Streaming with Kafka

  • Familiarity with modern frontend technologies

  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code

  • Knowledge of database technologies and data management practices

  • A deep understanding on how to build Data Intensive applications at scale
