Do Work That Matters

Join a newly formed Product Engineering crew focused on creating full-stack products and platforms that make a difference across CommBank.

Working in small, empowered squads, the team owns products end to end, from shaping an idea and setting technical direction through to building, operating and continuously improving it in production.

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you’ll bring together technical leadership, people leadership and delivery accountability. You’ll help teams navigate change with clarity, create an environment where engineers can do their best work and ensure our products deliver meaningful outcomes for their users.

You’ll join an organisation investing in modern, cloud-native technology and engineering practices to build tomorrow’s bank today.

See yourself in our team

You’ll lead approximately 15 engineers across two to three squads in an environment that combines the pace and ownership of product engineering with the scale and reach of CommBank.

The team is building greenfield internal products, modernising legacy platforms and establishing stronger engineering practices. You’ll provide clear direction through change while building a culture grounded in accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead, coach and grow high-performing engineering teams, creating an inclusive culture of accountability, curiosity and thoughtful challenge.
  • Set technical direction and guide design and architecture decisions across full-stack products and platforms.
  • Own delivery across the product lifecycle, supporting teams to build, run and continuously improve the solutions they create.
  • Remain technically engaged, contributing to design discussions, architectural decisions and code where your expertise will add value.
  • Partner closely with Product to turn complex problems into clear priorities and measurable business outcomes.
  • Build scalable, secure and resilient cloud-native solutions using modern engineering practices.
  • Strengthen engineering capability through mentoring, practical feedback and clear expectations.
  • Support commercial and delivery activities, including statements of work, supplier engagement and the effective use of resources.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

You bring strong engineering foundations and the leadership judgement to balance technology, people and delivery. You can create clarity in ambiguous environments, build trust across diverse teams and stay close enough to the technology to make practical, informed decisions.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Experience leading multiple engineering squads or comparable multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong engineering experience in Java or TypeScript, including Node.js and modern front-end frameworks such as React.
  • Experience designing, building and operating solutions on AWS.
  • Knowledge of microservices, API-driven architectures and container platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, continuous integration and delivery, observability, resilience and secure engineering practices.
  • A track record of building team capability through coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback.
  • The ability to partner with Product and other stakeholders to connect engineering decisions with customer and business value.
  • Confidence leading through ambiguity and change while maintaining clear accountability for outcomes.

Commercial experience, including managing statements of work or external delivery partners, would be valuable. However, this capability can be developed in the role.

If you’re ready to lead talented engineers, build products with purpose and help shape a modern product engineering culture, apply now.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
