Do Work That Matters

Customer Digital & AI is responsible for key CommBank digital channels and experiences, including the CommBank app and NetBank. Our teams create customer journeys spanning money management, payments, onboarding and personalisation, with a focus on useful, secure and resilient experiences.

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll lead a multidisciplinary digital squad and help shape customer-facing notifications and inbox capabilities. This role combines deep technical judgement with people leadership. You’ll stay close to architecture and implementation, guide engineers across native mobile and backend services, and work alongside Product and Design to turn customer evidence into measurable outcomes.

See yourself in our team

You’ll join a multidisciplinary squad of iOS, Android and full-stack backend engineers delivering end-to-end customer experiences. You’ll bring technical depth in native mobile and enough breadth to connect decisions across the wider product stack.

  • Co-own customer outcomes with Product and Design, from understanding the problem through to measuring production results.

  • Set technical direction across native mobile, web, APIs and backend services so the customer experience works as one coherent product.

  • Lead critical notifications and inbox capabilities, including the migration and operational readiness of a high-volume API.

  • Stay hands-on through architecture, solutioning, proofs of concept, code or delivery work where your contribution adds the most value.

  • Build security, observability, resilience and operational ownership into everyday engineering decisions.

  • Coach engineers, provide clear feedback and create an inclusive environment where people can grow and take ownership.

  • Improve automated testing, continuous integration and delivery, release practices and the squad’s path to production.

  • Lead the responsible use of AI across discovery, implementation, testing, documentation and operations.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

You’re a technically credible, product-minded engineering leader who can balance customer outcomes, engineering quality and team growth. You bring curiosity, adaptability and clear judgement, and you’re comfortable staying close to the technology while enabling specialists to own their domains.

  • Have led a multidisciplinary engineering squad responsible for customer-facing products in production.

  • Bring strong native iOS or Android expertise, using Swift or Objective-C, Kotlin or Java.

  • Have practical breadth across APIs and backend services, ideally including .NET/C# or Node.js.

  • Can guide architecture and trade-offs across mobile, web and backend layers without needing to be the deepest specialist in every technology.

  • Have coached engineers, supported development and handled constructive performance conversations.

  • Use customer insight, production signals and measurable outcomes to test assumptions and adjust direction.

  • Understand secure engineering, automated testing, observability, resilience, continuous delivery and build-and-run ownership.

The wider environment includes React, Next.js, TypeScript, GitHub Actions, Terraform and CloudFormation. Experience with these technologies is useful, but native mobile leadership is the core technical requirement.

If you want to build products customers depend on, grow a capable engineering team and shape excellent engineering in an AI-enabled organisation, we’d like to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
