Do work that matters

Customer Digital & AI is responsible for CommBank’s digital channels, including NetBank and the CommBank App. This squad will build and run self-service experiences that customers access through Companion.

NetBank is built with Next.js and TypeScript and integrates with supporting services through GraphQL. Companion also reaches customers through the CommBank App, so the squad works across web, native mobile and the services behind them.

See yourself in our team

As an Engineering Manager and Squad Tech Lead, you will lead the team building self-service experiences delivered to customers through Companion across NetBank and the CommBank App.

Being a hands-on technical and people leadership role, you’ll contribute to production code and code reviews, particularly where your experience can establish patterns, solve difficult problems or unblock the team. The balance will shift depending on what the squad needs, but you’ll remain actively involved in the software being built.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary squad delivering customer experiences across NetBank, the CommBank App, GraphQL and supporting backend services.
  • Set technical direction and help the team make sound decisions about architecture, API boundaries, performance, accessibility, security and maintainability.
  • Contribute to code and technical implementation where your involvement will have the most impact.
  • Work with Product and Design during discovery, before solutions become delivery commitments.
  • Build a team with clear expectations and strong ownership. Give useful feedback, support career development and handle performance issues directly.
  • Make build-and-run ownership part of everyday engineering through automated testing, observability, resilience and operational readiness.
  • Improve how the squad gets changes into production, including CI/CD, automation, release practices and the size and safety of changes.
  • Help the team use AI-assisted engineering responsibly. Generated code and other outputs should be understood, tested and reviewed with the same care as any other engineering work.

We’re interested in hearing from people who

  • Have led engineers delivering customer-facing digital products in production
  • Bring strong technical depth in full-stack web engineering, ideally including Next.js or React, TypeScript, GraphQL and backend integration
  • Are comfortable contributing to production code while also leading people and setting technical direction
  • Can guide architecture and implementation decisions without needing to make every decision yourself
  • Have enough familiarity with native iOS and Android development to lead work spanning web and app experiences. You don’t need to be the squad’s deepest native specialist
  • Have managed engineers, supported their development and handled difficult performance or delivery situations
  • Use customer feedback, production data and engineering evidence to test assumptions and change direction when needed
  • Understand the practical demands of running secure, resilient software at scale.

Technical background

Your strongest experience should be in modern full-stack web engineering. Technologies relevant to the squad include:

  • Web: Next.js, React and TypeScript
  • APIs and backend services: GraphQL, Node.js and/or .NET and C#
  • Native mobile: iOS and Swift; Android and Kotlin
  • CI/CD: GitHub Actions
  • Infrastructure as code: Terraform and CloudFormation
  • Engineering quality: automated testing, monitoring, observability, resilience and operational readiness
  • Security: secure design, identity, privacy and encryption

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
