What you'll do

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, Digital Platforms, the Engineering Manager of Quality will lead our Quality Engineering team, driving a culture of excellence in test automation, code quality and software reliability. They will be responsible for leading a team of 19 quality engineers with varying levels of coding experience, providing technical leadership, mentorship and strategic direction.

You will be responsible for evolving our quality practices beyond traditional testing by embedding modern engineering principles including testing, integration testing, end to end automation, code security testing and static analysis. You will closely collaborate with the Software engineering teams to implement scalable testing strategies, improve developer efficiency and enhance software quality.

In addition, you will:

  • Develop and drive the quality engineering strategy for Bunnings' digital platforms, embedding best practices in test automation, software reliability, and continuous quality improvements.

  • Champion agile testing methodologies and mentor teams in shift-left testing, test-driven development (TDD), and behaviour-driven development (BDD)

  • Influence Bunnings' overall quality and engineering strategy, ensuring testing, security, and reliability are foundational to the technical vision.

  • Provide direct management and coaching for senior quality engineers, enabling them to drive automation, performance testing, and code quality improvements.

  • Oversee and enforce high-quality, maintainable, and performant code standards, ensuring robust test automation, static analysis, and continuous integration (CI/CD) best practices.

  • Establish a quality-first engineering culture by integrating automated testing, shift-left quality strategies, test-driven development (TDD), and continuous testing into the software development lifecycle.

  • Collaborate with other engineering and product disciplines to drive an experimentation-driven culture, where data and iterative testing inform decisions and speed up delivery.

  • Communicate and advocate for scalable, secure, and resilient test automation strategies, ensuring alignment with business goals and development teams.

  • Mentor engineers in modern quality engineering techniques, including test automation frameworks, performance engineering, security testing and CI/CD best practices.

Who we're looking for

Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience leading and mentoring engineering teams, with a track record of fostering high-performing and motivating engineers.

They will have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a track record of driving change and have a pragmatic approach to problem solving.

In addition, they will:

  • 10+ years software development experience which includes developing backend web services

  • Strong knowledge of software testing methodologies, including unit testing, integration testing, performance testing, security testing, and test-driven development (TDD/BDD)

  • Hands-on experience with core web development technologies, such as C#, .NET, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, HTML, CSS

  • Testing in Microservices & Event-Driven Architectures – Understanding of quality strategies for APIs, microservices, contract testing (Pact, Postman, Insomnia), and event-driven architectures (Solace, Kafka, Pub/Sub, etc.).

  • Experience implementing and optimizing CI/CD pipelines, with tools like GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitLab CI/CD to drive continuous testing and deployment.

  • Proven ability to define and implement quality gates, test metrics, and automation-first strategies in large-scale digital environments.

  • Deep understanding of cloud-native architectures and DevOps principles, including Kubernetes, containerization (Docker), observability, and infrastructure as code (Terraform, Azure, or AWS).

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a track record of coaching teams, fostering a quality-driven culture, and influencing stakeholders at all levels.

  • Security & Compliance – Knowledge of secure coding practices, DevSecOps, OWASP principles, and automated security testing.

  • Monitoring & Observability – Experience with application performance monitoring (APM) logging and tracing
