Engineering Manager – Digital (CommBank App- Android/iOS)

You’re driven to build brilliant, secure, resilient, always-on digital experiences that millions of customers depend on every day. You lead from the front; technically credible, product-minded, and comfortable operating in ambiguity - while growing engineers and lifting the standards of those around you.

This role is for a Tech Lead who also leads people, someone who owns outcomes end-to-end, operates with high leverage, and actively redefines how software is built in a modern, AI-enabled engineering environment.

Do work that matters

Customer Digital & AI (CDAI) is responsible for CommBank’s digital channels, including NetBank and the CommBank App, the most used banking app in Australia.

Within Digital, you’ll help shape experiences at massive scale, working on critical customer journeys across money management, payments, onboarding, and personalisation; while continuously improving reliability, security, and engineering excellence.

See yourself in the team

You’ll lead a native mobile squad (iOS/Android) as a hands-on Engineering Manager and Squad Tech Lead.

Operating in a product trio (Engineering, Product, Design), you’ll co-own customer outcomes, not just delivery. Your squad will have clear problems to solve, and you’ll guide how solutions are shaped, built, and evolved.

You’ll stay close to the code and architecture, while also building a strong, engaged engineering team. You’ll set technical direction, unblock progress, and ensure your squad delivers high-quality, resilient software that stands up to real-world scale.

What you’ll do

  • Own outcomes, not just output – lead your squad to solve meaningful customer problems end-to-end

  • Lead in a product trio – partner deeply with Product and Design to shape solutions, not just implement them

  • Operate as a high-leverage technical leader – contribute to architecture and critical code paths while using modern tooling (including AI) to accelerate delivery and reduce manual effort

  • Build and run what you ship – ensure reliability, observability, and operational excellence are embedded from day one

  • Coach and grow engineers – develop capability, performance, and career pathways within your squad

  • Drive modern engineering practices – CI/CD, test automation, mobile excellence, and safe, frequent releases

  • Balance speed, quality, and risk – making pragmatic decisions that support long-term platform health

  • Continuously improve – foster a culture of learning, experimentation, and iteration

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in people who bring:

  • Experience leading high-performing engineering squads delivering customer-facing products

  • Strong technical depth in native mobile (iOS and/or Android), with the ability to lead with credibility

  • A product mindset - comfortable owning problems, not just executing requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to coach engineers and build strong teams

  • Experience embedding build/run ownership, reliability, observability, and secure engineering practices

  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across Product, Design, and broader stakeholders

  • Curiosity for modern approaches (e.g. AI-assisted development, automation, platform thinking)

Skills & technologies

You don’t need everything, but experience in some of the below will help:

  • Mobile (core focus): Android, Kotlin, Java; iOS, Swift, Objective-C

  • Backend: .NET / C#, Java, Node.js, APIs

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript

  • DevOps & CI/CD: GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus

  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Pulumi, CloudFormation

  • Quality & Reliability: automated testing, monitoring, operational readiness

  • Security: secure design, identity, encryption

If this sounds like you, apply today!

Working with us

We support flexible working, with a balance of in-office collaboration and remote work. You’ll be backed to grow, take ownership, and tackle meaningful challenges at scale.

Why this role is different

You won’t just manage a team, you’ll lead a squad, shape products, and own outcomes in one of Australia’s most impactful digital platforms.

You’ll also be expected to challenge how engineering is done, using modern tools, AI, and evolving architectural approaches to create step-change improvements in how your team builds, experiments, and delivers customer experiences.

If you're already part of the Commonwealth Bank Group (including Bankwest, x15ventures), you'll need to apply through Sidekick to submit a valid application. We’re keen to support you with the next step in your career.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
