The role / impact
You will join the forefront of our AI platform evolution, specifically focusing on the engineering and operationalisation of AI systems. Your work involves building the shared foundations—such as secure gateways for large language models and shared SDKs—that enable engineers across the organisation to deploy and operate AI-powered services safely and at scale.
By bridging the gap between AI specialists and software engineering, you will help shape how agent-driven products are structured and monitored in production. This is a forward-looking role where you will influence the future direction of the platform, ensuring it remains a reliable and usable foundation for internal teams as they adopt emerging agentic technologies.
The team
The AI platform team is a collaborative group distributed across Australia. They work closely with security specialists and AI practitioners to build agentic platforms, prioritising a fast-paced environment where iterative thinking and sharing knowledge are central to how they succeed.
The team is currently working on
Building and evolving Project Play, an agentic platform designed to allow the creation and deployment of agents into production.
Developing the core technical stack using Python, AWS, Terraform, and Kubernetes to support AI workloads.
Implementing evaluation and observability tooling to support the responsible and reliable use of AI across the business.
Refining the AI Gateway to provide secure access to multiple large language model providers for internal engineering teams.
Where and how you can work
This role is open to candidates anywhere in Australia, with the team already operating across multiple time zones including Perth and Melbourne. You can work remotely or from one of our office spaces, provided you can accommodate common working hours to stay connected with your teammates
Here are some of the things we are looking for
Your background includes a strong proficiency in writing production-quality Python and a willingness to learn or evolve with different technology stacks.
Familiarity with cloud foundations like Terraform, Kubernetes, and AWS is essential for you to manage and scale platform components.
You possess an operational mindset, prioritising reliability, documentation, and the end-to-end customer experience in everything you build.
A collaborative spirit is part of your DNA, meaning you enjoy pairing with others, reviewing designs, and pivoting quickly when goals change.
Experience using AI-powered developer tools such as GitHub Copilot will help you thrive in our fast-moving, automation-focused environment.
Apply even if your experience isn't a perfect match! At Xero, we hire based on your skills, passion, and the unique perspective you can bring to enhance our culture and team.
