PORTWEST, a leading global manufacturer of safety wear, workwear and PPE is currently seeking applications for the position Embroidery Operative in our offices in Altona, Australia, on full time basis, reporting to the Embroidery Manager. JOB SUMMARY:
The Embroidery Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining commercial embroidery machines to produce high-quality branded garments and products. The role requires strong attention to detail, precision, and the ability to follow design specifications and production schedules.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform garment embroidery in accordance with company and customer specifications, including correct logo placement, colour selection, and quantities.
- Inspect garments for defects, damage, or inconsistencies prior to embroidery and report any issues to the appropriate team member.
- Prepare garments and materials for embroidery, ensuring correct order details and specifications are followed.
- Set up and operate embroidery machines and associated equipment safely and efficiently.
- Change threads, needles, and backing materials as required for different jobs.
- Monitor embroidery runs to ensure quality standards are maintained throughout production.
- Conduct quality checks on completed embroidery to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to customer requirements.
- Assist with trimming threads, finishing garments, and preparing completed items for packing or dispatch.
- Perform basic machine cleaning and routine maintenance to ensure equipment is operating correctly.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work area in line with workplace health and safety procedures.
- Communicate with internal teams regarding job requirements, production timelines, and any issues that may impact order completion.
- Support the wider production and warehouse team as required to meet operational needs.
In absence of Embroidery Manager :
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the embroidery department, including scheduling jobs, assigning tasks, and monitoring workflow to ensure deadlines are met.
- Supervise and support embroidery staff, ensuring productivity, quality, and safety standards are consistently maintained.
- Operate and maintain embroidery machines, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate servicing or repairs as required.
- Monitor and respond to emails in a timely manner, providing clear and accurate instructions to the Sales/Customer Service team regarding job requirements, approvals, and timelines.
- Arrange and coordinate sample production where required, ensuring accuracy and timely turnaround.
- Utilise embroidery software (e.g. Wilcom) to review, adjust, or support design and production requirements.
- Ensure effective coordination and communication across departments to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow.
- Escalate important issues, risks, or operational concerns to the management team in a timely manner.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience operating commercial embroidery machines
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality and accuracy
- Ability to read and follow job specifications, artwork, and production schedules
- Good problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot basic machine or production issues
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team
- Basic computer skills, including email communication
