Who we are

Nomad Atomics is on a mission to make the broad uptake of quantum sensing a reality and simultaneously push the limits of our field beyond what we think is possible. We are building the world’s most advanced fit-for-purpose quantum sensors to allow us to see the world like never before.

Our team is made up of leaders in the quantum sensing field. We believe the time for commercial quantum sensing has come, and we are determined to make it happen.

We are growing here at Nomad Atomics – FAST. We are searching for people who want to finally take the commercial sensing game into the modern era of technology.

Who you are

You are a voracious learner, and you love building things. You do not shy away from taking on the impossible. You apply these principles to all parts of science and engineering and are excited to operate at the forefront of technology development.  You are an expert in your field and are ready to jump headfirst into the strange world of quantum sensing.

It’s ok if you don’t have all the skills yet to build a quantum sensor, because you want to work with a global team of experts to fill in the gaps. You may have come from a large corporation or be fresh out of university but the idea of working in a fast-paced, highly iterative, and integrated team is exciting.

Your role

Working hand in hand with the co-founders, you’ll be responsible for the development of digital and analogue circuits for our field sensors. You will also contribute to all electronics and optical sub-systems of Nomad’s quantum sensors. This is an exceptionally hands-on role requiring a broad skill set, including general circuit design and prototyping, RF system development and the integration of FPGAs and SoCs. (These things are being used in the field, and we are moving fast.)

We are seeking an Electronics Engineer with strong communication skills who can work effectively with engineers, manufacturing staff, and business stakeholders. The role requires a willingness to ask questions, seek clarification, and learn from more experienced team members. You will help gather and understand requirements, contribute to hands‑on testing and design tasks, and apply structured problem‑solving to support sound engineering decisions.

You will be responsible for and deeply embedded in the end-to-end development and deployment of our sensors and will be engaged daily in tasks like:

  • Work with a team of physicists and engineers to develop field ready quantum sensors
  • Design, build and test custom PCBs for the mechanical, optical and electronic subsystems
  • Hand assemble PCBs and cable harnesses to support rapid prototyping and field test systems
  • Develop and maintain assembly documentation
  • Work with manufacturing partners for timely prototype and series production
  • Debug and optimise subsystem and sensor performance in harsh environments

Requirements

It’s not about where you have come. What truly matters is that you are a fast learner. The types of things people applying for this role have done prior to Nomad are things like:

  • Advanced diploma or bachelor's degree in electrical, electronic, or mechatronic engineering, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience, working in highly collaborative and fast-paced environments
  • Electronics troubleshooting and SMT-soldering
  • Lab-based work including system bring-up, testing, and integration schematic design, PCB layout and prototyping for mixed-signal and low-noise analogue circuits firmware development for microcontrollers, and optimally knowledge of Xilinx SoCs and Xilinx toolchain (e.g. Vivado)
  • Experience designing or working with RF / Microwave / Radar systems
  • Power supply design, battery operated devices, EMC testing, and device certifications
  • Documenting general assembly processes, PCBAs, cable looms

If you think you’re right for the role, but don’t have some of these skills, reach out – we’d love to talk anyway.

Benefits

The role is full-time and based in Melbourne, Australia. Applicants must have current Australian working rights (citizenship or permanent residency).

We have the flexibility to work from home from time to time, but mostly it’s getting your hands dirty in our shiny labs.

We offer a competitive salary, employee share option package and opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
