About Airwallex

Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 676,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.

We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,300 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.

About the team

The Liquidity Platform team powers the core infrastructure that enables Airwallex to manage funds efficiently, securely and intelligently across the globe.

Our platform ensures that money is always in the right place, at the right time, and used in the most effective way. We build systems for liquidity management, safeguarding, investment, and cash data management and analysis. These capabilities are critical to supporting Airwallex’s global operations, regulatory obligations and capital efficiency.

As Airwallex continues to scale globally, liquidity becomes one of the most important and complex infrastructure challenges. We need to forecast funding needs, optimize cash movements, support safeguarding compliance across jurisdictions, improve investment capabilities, and uncover new opportunities for capital optimization through high-quality data and analytics.

We are looking for talented and driven backend engineers to join the Liquidity Platform team and help us build one of the world’s most advanced and efficient liquidity management systems.

What you’ll do

You are an experienced backend engineer who is comfortable working in complex domains like financial markets, payments or other high-integrity distributed systems. You care deeply about correctness, simplicity and operability, and you’re happy to engage with product and non-technical stakeholders on trade-offs.

You’re pragmatic: you can balance ideal architectures with the realities of delivery, and you’re comfortable iterating on systems that are already in production.

This role is based in Singapore.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build and own backend services for global liquidity management, safeguarding, investment workflows, and cash data management.

  • Develop systems that ensure funds are available in the right entities, accounts and currencies to support global business operations efficiently and reliably.

  • Build scalable platforms for liquidity forecasting, cash positioning, internal fund movement, funding optimisation, and operational decision-making.

  • Contribute to Airwallex’s global safeguarding compliance infrastructure by building reliable systems that support regulatory reporting, segregation of funds, reconciliation and control processes.

  • Design and enhance investment platform capabilities that help Airwallex manage surplus funds safely, efficiently and in line with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Build data pipelines, models and analytical capabilities to improve visibility into cash positions, liquidity usage, fund flows and optimisation opportunities.

  • Work on complex distributed systems using modern backend architecture, including microservices, event-driven workflows, Kafka, gRPC, REST APIs, and SQL/NoSQL datastores.

  • Implement robust controls for limits, approvals, reconciliation, data quality, monitoring and auditability to ensure our platform behaves predictably under stress and failure scenarios.

  • Work end-to-end on features: from requirements clarification and solution design, to implementation, automated testing, deployment, observability and operational runbooks.

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Treasury, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Risk, Data and other engineering teams to design APIs, data contracts and workflows that are reliable, observable and easy to operate.

  • Instrument services with metrics, logs and tracing, and use these tools to support capacity planning, performance optimisation, incident response and continuous improvement.

  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions; mentor less-experienced engineers where appropriate.

  • Take part in our on-call rotation, supported by strong observability, runbooks and team processes, to ensure the Liquidity Platform remains reliable and highly available.

Who you are

We’re looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.

Minimum qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience building and operating backend systems in production.

  • Strong programming experience in one or more JVM languages (e.g. Kotlin, Java) or a comparable backend stack, and a willingness to work primarily in the JVM ecosystem.

  • Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals: concurrency, data consistency, idempotency, retries, backoff, and failure modes in networked services.

  • Experience designing and working with REST and or gRPC APIs, and persistence layers using relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and/or key-value stores.

  • Proficiency with event-driven architectures and message brokers/streams (e.g. Kafka or similar).

  • Strong focus on testing and quality: unit, integration and contract tests; familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.

  • Good grasp of observability: metrics, logging, tracing and alerting, and how to use them to debug production issues.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working with cross functional partners in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience in fintech, payments, treasury, banking, liquidity management, safeguarding, investment platforms, regulatory reporting or financial data systems.

  • Experience building systems that require strong auditability, reconciliation, controls, approval workflows or financial correctness.

  • Experience working with data-intensive systems, cash flow analytics, forecasting, reporting or operational dashboards.

  • Familiarity with financial operations concepts such as cash positioning, fund movement, bank account structures, entity-level liquidity, safeguarding, investment limits or cash optimisation.

  • Experience designing platforms that support global operations across multiple markets, currencies, entities or regulatory environments.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
