Description

Be the architect of Contour’s student-first digital experience.

Are you obsessed with building pixel-perfect, intuitive user experiences? Do you thrive on systemising design, turning a component library into a seamless product? Are you ready to be the foundational product designer for a platform that will be used by thousands of students?

Contour's explosive growth is propelling a major investment in our own technology. We are building a new suite of student-first products from the ground up, including a Learning Management System (LMS), question banks, sign-up forms, and a new marketing website. We seek a hands-on, product-focused UI/UX Designer to own our user experience.

This is a newly-created, core design role, not a brand-only position. You will be responsible for the entire design process: creating wireframes, designing high-fidelity mockups, and building interactive prototypes in Figma. You will partner with our Lead Brand & Visual Designer to apply the Contour style guide, standardise our design system (based on modern UI libraries), and work tightly with engineers to ensure perfect design-to-code fidelity. You will be the expert building the user experience that defines our digital platform.

Who Are We

At Contour, we’re reshaping education, one student at a time.

Born from the frustration of students who knew the system could be better, we set out to build what we once wished existed: tutoring that actually works. Not generic classes. Not recycled notes. Not overpriced, overcrowded rooms with an out-of-touch teacher who couldn’t relate. But a complete ecosystem of tutoring, resources, and support, meticulously designed to help every student reach their full potential.

Since 2020, over 10,000+ students have trusted Contour to guide their academic journey, and we’ve grown to over 300+ team members. We’ve produced hundreds of 99+ ATARs, tutored the World-Record UCAT scorer, and placed more students into medical school than any school in Australia.

Our growth is a testament to the simple philosophy: Put the student first, always. Everything we design, from our world-class tutor-training programs to our purpose-built campuses, exists to help students master content faster, perform with confidence, and even rekindle the joy of learning.

Contour is a group of three brands united by one goal: to give every student the best chance to achieve their full potential:

  • Contour Education: Reshaping how students master their high school subjects with small-group tutoring, structured resources, and 1-on-1 support across Maths, Science, and English.
  • Contour Medprep: Reshaping medical preparation with a proven, step-by-step pathway through the UCAT, interviews, and admissions, led by a team of 100+ medical students.
  • Contour TestPrep: Reshaping test preparation, starting with the selective entry exam, through rigorous tutoring, mock exams, and data-driven feedback to give students a decisive advantage.

This is Contour. Built by students, for students.

What You Will Do

As our UI/UX Designer, you will be the architect of our product's user experience, from discovery to delivery, working in deep collaboration with the engineering team.

  • Own the Design System: Build and evolve our tokenised design library (Figma Variables to Tailwind V4). Specify states, sizes, density, and interactions for all components (inputs, dialogs/sheets, tables, pagination, toasts, etc.) and compose them into product patterns for our LMS.
  • Design & Prototype Key Flows: Map out information architecture, create low-fidelity wireframes, and design high-fidelity, end-to-end flows for all key user journeys (auth, admin management, resource navigation, etc.).
  • Validate Designs: Plan and conduct usability testing sessions with users and internal stakeholders, iterating on prototypes to refine the user experience based on real feedback.
  • Create Developer-Ready Handoffs: Deliver developer-ready specs annotating component properties, variants, responsive behaviour, keyboard flows, and accessibility (a11y) notes.
  • Collaborate Deeply with Engineering: Work daily with engineers, linking Figma components to Storybook, using shared acceptance criteria, and performing Design QA to ensure flawless execution.
  • Maintain & Systemise Libraries: Maintain all Figma libraries (foundations, primitives, patterns, flows) as the single source of truth for our website, LMS, and future mobile apps.
  • Align with Brand: Partner closely with our Lead Brand & Visual Designer to ensure the product's UI/UX is a perfect expression of our brand identity.

What You Will Bring
  • Proven Product Designer: 2+ years of UI/UX experience with a strong portfolio of shipped projects.
  • Figma Master: Expert proficiency in Figma, including Variants, Component Properties, Variables (tokens/modes), Libraries, Branching/Merging, and Dev Mode.
  • Systems Thinker: Hands-on experience designing with a component library (like shadcn/ui), defining semantic tokens, and maintaining light/dark mode parity.
  • Technical Collaborator: You're used to collaborating directly with engineers and understand how design translates to code.
  • Accessibility Advocate: A strong understanding of inclusive design principles and a11y.
  • Multi-Platform Expert: Strong knowledge of mobile platform patterns (iOS/Android) and modern responsive design (container queries, fluid sizing).
  • Motion Specialist: Experience setting guidelines for motion and using tools (Lottie, After Effects, etc.) to bring marketing and product to life.
  • Proactive Problem-Solver: You don't wait for direction, seeing opportunities and taking initiative to refine the user experience.
  • Bonus Points: Familiarity with Tailwind CSS (v4) and how tokens map to utilities and experience with design UI/UX for Ed-Tech.

Why You Will Love It
  • High Impact: This isn't a maintenance role. You will be the foundational UI/UX architect of our entire digital product experience, directly impacting thousands of students.
  • Total Design Ownership: Aside from brownfield and expansion projects, most of your work will be with greenfield projects. You'll have the autonomy to solve complex UX challenges and build our design system from the ground up, working directly with the Engineering Lead and Co-founders.
  • Clear Path for Growth: This pivotal role is designed to evolve into our future Product Design Lead or Head of Product Design as the product and team expand.
  • Competitive Package: We offer a top-tier salary and a flexible, hybrid environment where we value output, not hours. Our supportive benefits include an EAP, extra leave, and lifestyle allowances.
  • A Vision to Believe In: We’re ambitious, passionate, and on a mission to reshape education in Australia. Our goal is for Contour to become the most trusted name in tutoring nationwide.

If this challenge sparks your product-design flame and drive to level up, this is the role for you!

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
