Job Title: Technical Writer

Location: (including hybrid): Melbourne, Australia

Team: Delivery

Reporting To: Head of Delivery

Kaluza reimagines energy to bring net-zero within everyone’s reach. Our intelligent Platform enables energy utilities to unlock the full value of a radically changing energy system and propel us to a future where renewable energy is sustainable, affordable and accessible for all.

From automating and simplifying core operations including billing to create a lower-cost, higher-engagement experience, to optimising energy usage across smart devices in the home, we turn tough challenges into win-win-win outcomes for customers, suppliers and the energy system.

We champion a flexible, hybrid work approach and we find that teams often benefit from coming together in the office at least 2-3 days a week to foster connection and accelerate progress.

Outside of these collaborative opportunities, we aim to be as flexible as possible to balance work with life. As a company we come together annually for our conference and end of year celebrations!

Our goal is to build a self-sufficient and empowered team here on the ground in Australia. We’re well on our way, but until we get there we still have some reliances on our UK team. Being comfortable working flexibly for a portion of your working week to cover time zones is required.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

  • You’ll be working across both Product and Technology, within our Delivery and Portfolio function as a technical writer, supporting:

    • Kaluza’s Product community: A group of Product Managers and Leaders focused on translating complex needs into simple and innovative solutions that solve real customer and business problems.
    • Kaluza’s Technology community: A large team of both data-led and product focused Software and Production Engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness by ensuring best practices across the board of the community.

What will I be doing?

We are seeking a highly motivated Technical Writer to help our product teams, engineers, and internal stakeholders effectively build, support, and scale our innovative platform. You will shape complex ideas, processes, and technology into simple, accurate, and effective documentation that empowers our clients and users — combining strategic content design with hands-on, docs-as-code delivery through an AI-augmented documentation pipeline. The tech writing team acts as both Site Editors and Admins, owning the tools and templates that empower SMEs and running rigorous human-in-the-loop reviews of every draft before it ships. You'll be a critical link in building a 'documentation-led' mindset across Kaluza, raising the visibility and impact of the technical writing practice.

Specifically, you will support and drive in the following areas:

  1. AI-Augmented Documentation Pipeline & Template Ownership
  • AI Agent Management: Maintain and improve our doc-creation AI agents (e.g. Gemini, Claude) alongside the existing tech writing team and SME contributors.
  • Template & Prompt Governance: Maintain and refine the templates, style guides, and instructional prompts that feed the AI models, ensuring outputs meet client needs.
  • Information Architecture: Support a sophisticated IA that balances global product standards with localised client needs, using Markdoc notations and YAML configuration to surface region- and client-specific content views.
  • End-to-End Workflow Management: Manage the full documentation lifecycle via Git and a dedicated Jira board, coordinating with SME contributors from initial request through to publication.
  • Release Support: Work to tight deadlines alongside SMEs to review and publish technical pages, product specifications, and release notes on time.
  1. Human-in-the-Loop Editorial Review
  • Technical Copy Editing: Review AI-generated google doc drafts to ensure tone, accuracy, readability, and consistency with Kaluza's formatting standards, collaborating with SMEs to produce polished, client-facing content.
  • Terminology Enforcement: Replace internal terms with external-facing equivalents and gate 'under the hood' detail from client-facing copy.
  • Conversion & Publishing: Use the Markdoc converter agent to transform finalised drafts into Markdoc and publish via Redocly — including manual editing and adding Markdoc annotations where needed.
  • Audience Pitch: Calibrate each document to its audience — from non-technical BAs and managers, through to engineers consuming API schemas.
  • SME Collaboration: Build strong relationships with product squads and engineering teams to gather information and translate complex concepts into clear, concise content.
  1. Site Administration, Standards & Continuous Improvement
  • Redocly Site Configuration: Edit YAML configuration files to maintain sidebar and navbar menus, search facets, and other site elements.
  • Access Control: Manage Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) at the directory, page and inline-text level via Redocly YAML configuration and inline annotations, so clients only see content relevant to their region or team.
  • Redocly Admin: Monitor contributor seat counts, manage site deployments, perform basic troubleshooting, and liaise with Redocly support on more complex issues.
  • Standards & Governance: Establish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and metadata/tagging conventions across all repositories. Use established processes to triage, scope, and implement technical writing requests.
  • IA Gatekeeping: Ensure new documentation requests follow existing templates and that the site's information architecture is preserved over time.
  • Continuous Improvement: Conduct regular audits of existing documentation to identify gaps, staying informed of industry best practices in technical writing and information architecture.

About You

Ideally you will have:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in Technical Writing.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of product and engineering processes, specifically API development and developer documentation best practices, and a basic grasp of service-based architecture.
  • AI Tool Fluency: Proven experience working with AI agents (e.g. Gemini or Claude), including refining prompts and maintaining the templates and style guides that drive content generation.
  • Docs-as-Code: Comfortable with Git workflows (branching, commits, Pull Requests) and editing markup languages such as Markdoc, Markdown, MDX, DITA, or RST. Able to read and edit YAML for site configuration.
  • Methodology: Experience working within Agile development environments and a solid understanding of the product development lifecycle (PDLC).
  • Communication: Impeccable spelling, grammar, and writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strategic Thinking: Experience creating content strategies and structuring complex information in a clear, intuitive manner.
  • Attention to Detail: Excellent attention to detail and the ability to spot issues between teams, business areas, and processes.
  • Tools: Experience with docs-as-code publishing platform such as Redocly (or similar).
  • Mindset: A growth-oriented mindset, with an eye towards creative thinking, as well as having a calm + quick method to problem-solving.

What would set you apart:

  • Experience documenting GraphQL API schemas
  • Ability to read and edit JSON
  • Familiarity with command-line tools and inline code annotations within Markdown, MDX, or Markdoc
  • A public GitHub profile or portfolio of writing samples you're happy to share

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
