As a Team Lead, you'll manage Full Stack engineers in multiple pods, driving project delivery, technical excellence, and fostering a positive team environment.
Our Purpose

Engineering Management @ Xero
We're hiring for multiple Team Lead roles across our engineering teams.
As Team Lead, you will have a strong technical background and be a people manager for a group of Full Stack engineers distributed across Australia and New Zealand.
You'll have the opportunity to join teams like:
Accounting Core:
Lead the engineers who own the Chart of Accounts domain and its critical APIs, used both internally and externally across the Xero ecosystem. You will lead a core pod of engineers and two pods of engineering contractors, ensuring seamless collaboration. The team focus on the modernisation of existing APIs and legacy front-end UI. You will navigate frequent prioritisation shifts due to the team's central role, managing changes and stakeholder expectations.
Tech stack: The team uses .Net and C# but we are technology agnostic for our people lead roles. We look for a strong background in software development and an ability to learn complex accounting domains and customer impact.
Data Reliability Engineering:
Lead a team that own, operate, and modernise Xero DB, the core database underpinning Xero's accounting engine! You will lead a group of seven engineers who are addressing the fascinating challenge and scale of operations and cloud migration strategies. The team also develops internal tools and work closely with product teams on their Xero DB integration.
Tech stack: Database technology (preferably SQL Server), open-source options (e.g. Aurora PostgreSQL), and AWS services (e.g. RDS).
How you'll make an impact
- People Leadership: Inspire, develop, and empower a talented team of software engineers through regular 1:1s, performance management, and career coaching.
- Cultivate Culture: Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team environment where engineers feel empowered, supported, and continuously learning.
- Drive Technical Excellence: Provide strong technical leadership and guidance, and support the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and maintainable solutions. You'll contribute to architectural discussions and champion engineering best practices.
- Oversee Project Delivery: Work with the Technical Lead and Principal Engineers to drive the planning, execution, and successful delivery of complex projects collaborating closely with Product Owners and other stakeholders.
- Champion Improvement: Advocate for continuous improvement in our engineering processes, automation, and continuous delivery pipelines to enhance efficiency and quality.
What you'll bring
- People Leadership: Experience managing a team, with strong coaching and mentoring skills.
- Growth Mindset: A genuine commitment to continuous learning and a strong desire to help others grow their skills and careers.
- Software Engineering Expertise: Strong foundation in computer science and software engineering, with deep knowledge of software design, distributed systems, and scalable architectures.
- Strategic Planning & Execution: Skilled at planning, team building, and execution, ensuring that projects meet commitments and are delivered with predictability and high quality.
- Agile Expertise: Hands-on experience working effectively in agile environments (Scrum, Kanban), promoting iterative development and continuous delivery.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene
Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
