Do work that matters

We're building tomorrow’s bank today, which means we need creative and diverse engineers to help us redefine what customers expect from a bank. Envisioning new technologies that are still waiting to be invented and reimagining products that support our customers and help build Australia’s future economy.

CommBank is recognised as leading the industry in IT and operations with its world-class platforms and processes, agile IT infrastructure, and innovation in everything from payments to internet banking and mobile apps. Our Software team are the brains behind Australia’s number one banking app, Netbank, Cardless Cash and Spend Tracker. We go beyond a passion for web and mobile development, creating reliable APIs at a unique scale in Australia, and you could be a part of that journey.

See yourself in our team

You will be part of a squad working with our Digital Growth Engine crew, that focuses on transforming the way customers experience home lending. Our mission is to scale our digital channel at viable economics, convert First Home Buyers and Homeseekers to CBA, and build strategic digital partnerships and ecosystems that set new industry standards.

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer who is passionate about building impactful products, thrives in a Product Operating Model, and is eager to take full ownership of solving real user problems. You will join a cross-functional, empowered team, working side-by-side with a Product Owner/Manager and Designer to form the core product trio. Your role goes beyond coding: you will contribute to ideation, design, implementation, testing, release, and ongoing improvement of our products.

We value a “product engineer” mindset—where you care as much about the product’s success and user experience as you do about code. We expect you to be a clear communicator who collaborates proactively with peers and stakeholders, and to demonstrate technical leadership within and beyond the team.

We’re interested in hearing from people who

  • Possesses full-cycle engineering experiences: system design (architecture), build, testing (unit, integration, system), release, and ongoing maintenance

  • Partners as part of a “core trio” (Product, Design, Engineering) to deeply understand business and user problems, and co-create solutions

  • Leads technical design, architecture, and implementation for new and existing features, providing thought leadership and influencing technology direction across the team

  • Actively embraces and integrates AI-driven solutions (including LLMs and agentic AI approaches) to enhance our engineering workflows and product capabilities

  • Proven ability to provide technical thought leadership: influencing engineering culture, evaluating and introducing new technologies, guiding team direction, mentors and supports other engineers

  • Are quality-focused and take pride in delivering well-tested, robust, and maintainable software. Also, comfortable owning testing responsibilities as there is no separate QA

  • Embraces change and ambiguity, taking initiative in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • Have experimental and E2E ownership mindset, deliver with minimum supervision.

Tech Skills

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

  • Strong expertise in frontend with Next.js, React.js, Typescript

  • Advanced proficiency in backend development in Node.js, .NET Core, .NET Framework

  • Demonstrated experience in solution design and architecture principles

  • Expertise with Microservices, Restful API design pattern

  • Working knowledge of public cloud engineering - AWS preferred

  • Understanding of DevOps, CI-CD pipeline - TeamCity, Octopus, GitHub Actions

  • Any experience with the following would be great - AI/ML development, Prompt engineering, or integrating agentic AI in the software development process, Leading small technical teams

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
