Where the team fits in
The Staff Software Engineer (Mobile) role sits within the Listing Foundations squad, a key part of the Listing, Visualisation & Content business unit. The Listing Foundations squad is the team supporting and evolving the core systems that power property detail pages, search results, and listing content for millions of Australians every month. We keep these systems fast, reliable, and ready for innovation, enabling REA to deliver new features and high-quality user experiences at scale.
What the role is all about
- Writing, testing, and documenting code according to REA Engineering standards and practices.
- Leading or significantly contributing to initiatives with a strategic focus and value.
- Providing deep expertise and specialized knowledge across iOS and Android, role modelling the cross-platform mindset.
- Solving deep, complex technical problems in ways that enable other team members to learn and extend.
- Coaching and mentoring others to foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
- Supporting the Engineering Manager in setting the technical direction, engineering practices and upskilling the team’s capabilities.
- Connecting with engineers across the organisation facing similar technical challenges to connect solution architecture with broader tech strategy.
- Playing a key role in representing the Core Experience tribe in the cross-REA mobile leadership and community forums
- Working with stakeholders to design high-quality solutions that meet the needs of our users.
- Championing and evolving our product component architecture across web and native for the core listings experience.
- Supporting production systems and products, including being part of the day pager escalation roster and managing federation requests from other areas of the business.
- While you will have a home team, we operate with a tribe mindset and our Staff Engineers support across multiple teams to go where the fire is hottest
Who we’re looking for
- Experience shipping and supporting large scale iOS and/or Android applications to a large user base.
- Proven cross-platform experience and the ability to operate across both the iOS and Android ecosystems.
- While mobile is your core strength, you have experience working across the stack and supporting production features end to end, from the glass to through to backend services.
- Experience working collaboratively with specialists across web, native and backend to design and deliver high-quality solutions which support a multi-platform user experience.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical solutions and strategy to both non-technical leaders and fellow engineers.
- Leadership and mentoring skills with a passion for developing talent and building inclusive, high-performing teams.
- Experience leading teams to produce high-quality solutions, with a track record of setting high standards for engineering quality, testing, observability, and monitoring.
- Experience working through critical, operational situations and leading the resolution of high-impact issues and incidents.
- Deeply embodies the "you build it, you run it" philosophy, taking full ownership of services from design through to production. You are proactive in identifying and implementing improvements to system health, reliability, and performance.
- Experience developing long-term architectural patterns.
