Job Description

About the Team – Traffic Management

As part of SEEK’s Engineering Platforms group, the Traffic Management team ensures secure and reliable connectivity for our engineering teams. We manage how traffic flows between the internet and our cloud environments, and provide connectivity solutions for internal applications.The Traffic Management function is responsible for how all incoming and internal traffic flows through SEEK’s systems - from the internet edge through to multiple Kubernetes clusters and AWS services.We design and maintain the backbone that keeps SEEK’s applications reachable, secure, and performant. Our work includes:

  • Edge security and optimisation - using Cloudflare to cache and accelerate content, block malicious attacks and manage dynamic configuration through IaC and pipelines.
  • Internal traffic and service mesh management - operating Istio across Kubernetes clusters, managing ingress, load balancing, deployment strategies, service discovery and connectivity, authentication and authorisation and observability enablement
  • Developer experience - providing self-service capabilities with a focus on removing friction, providing sensible defaults and seamlessly integrating traffic management capabilities in a way that eliminates complexity for engineering teams
  • Infrastructure automation - Accelerating productivity through Infrastructure-as-Code (including Terraform), automation, and observability

About the Role
We’re looking for a Staff Engineer — a senior technical leader with deep expertise in modern software engineering practices, cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes and Istio - to guide the continued evolution of SEEK’s traffic management capabilities and have impact across multiple engineering teams.In this role, you'll shape the strategy for traffic management across SEEK's Kubernetes platform. You'll define how we route, secure, and monitor traffic from edge to workload, while ensuring our platform delivers the stability, scalability, and low-friction experience that makes it the preferred choice for production workloads.Beyond technical leadership, you'll mentor engineers and drive how we apply mature software engineering practices to build systems that developers love and customers trust.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and operation of SEEK’s traffic management capabilities from Cloudflare through to Kubernetes and AWS
  • Architect scalable, secure systems for traffic management with comprehensive network visibility
  • Build tools and frameworks that streamline deployment, monitoring, and developer workflows
  • Champion Infrastructure-as-Code practices (especially Terraform) and drive testing and automation across environments
  • Partner with Engineering, Security, and Architecture teams to align platform roadmaps with SEEK’s technical strategy
  • Mentor engineers and advocate for best practices in software engineering, reliability, observability, and scalable system design

Qualifications

You’ll Bring

  • Platform engineering experience building and scaling distributed systems at enterprise scale
  • Kubernetes expertise including architecture, high-availability clusters, and ecosystem tools including Istio
  • Software engineering skills for building automation, tooling, platform components, and self-service developer tools including Kubernetes operators
  • Technical leadership experience driving architectural decisions and strategy across multi-team platforms
  • Infrastructure-as-Code mastery with Terraform, Helm, GitOps workflows, and CI/CD pipeline design
  • Excellent communication skills with a genuine preference for collaborative work - someone who thrives on frequent interaction with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders
  • An innovative mindset and developer-first approach – always seeking opportunities to enhance systems, processes, and engineer experience across SEEK’s cloud and platform environments

Bonus Skills

  • Contributions to Kubernetes, Istio or related CNCF projects
  • Experience running or managing multi-tenant Kubernetes clusters at scale
  • Relevant certifications, such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or similar
