⚡About Amber

Amber is an entirely new way of thinking about buying, banking and selling energy – where home energy technology works to put money back in customers’ pockets and accelerate the renewable energy transition. Everything we build is about making that possible and putting traditional retailers in the shade.

We believe the cheapest, fastest and most rewarding way to reach 100% renewables is to automate the growing wave of home batteries and EVs. Customers get direct access to the real-time wholesale electricity price and the technology to shift energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid and exported to the grid at times when the price they can be paid for it is highest.

We are backed by Australia’s leading VCs (including Square Peg Capital, Main Sequence Ventures, Rubio Impact Ventures, and Breakthrough Victoria), impact-focused investors and individuals, and most recently by Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack and ETF Partners (UK/Europe based).
We are growing rapidly and have thousands of customers who love what we are doing and a great product that will play a significant role in driving Australia and the world towards a renewable future.

We’re now at a critical moment in taking the business to real scale as we disrupt a huge market for the better. You’d be a part of a rapidly growing team of over 175, with expertise across energy, technology, marketing, and operations. We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and a great culture of people who love coming to work to build a better world.

Amber for Batteries unlocks more value for homeowners with batteries, driving down their energy bills and their payback periods. By storing energy when it’s cheap and exporting it to the grid for wholesale feed-in rates of up to $19/kWh, Amber’s software is completely changing the economics of home batteries and accelerating the energy transition.

Amber for EVs is our EV smart charging solution that helps EV owners save on their charging costs by using more cheap, renewable energy - whether that’s their own excess solar energy, or renewable energy that’s abundant in the grid. In 2025, we are kicking off development of our game-changing vehicle-to-grid technology.

💻About the Role

At Amber we believe that enabling a culture where everyone at Amber is set up to do the best work of their lives and feels connected and supported is one of the most important things we can do to ensure Amber’s long-term success.

Want to help improve the environment by shifting the worlds energy usage towards renewables?

Amber is transforming how people access and use energy, helping customers shift usage to times when renewable energy is abundant and affordable, and export to the grid when it has the highest impact. It’s one of the fastest ways Australia can get to 100% renewable energy, and we’re building the products that make that shift easy and rewarding.

We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer, a highly experienced, hands-on design leader with exceptional craft and product judgment. You’ll be the most senior IC designer in the team, working on Amber’s most strategically important opportunities. Instead of sitting in a single product stream, you’ll be deployed where your expertise can have the highest impact: shaping direction, elevating quality, and driving clarity in ambiguous problem spaces.

This role is ideal for someone who leads through influence and example, not management; who thrives on complex product challenges; and who is energised by lifting the quality of craft and decision-making across a growing organisation.

👉🏽 In this role, you’ll:

  • Take on high priority, high ambiguity product challenges that have broad customer and business impact.
  • Work across product streams, shaping problem framing, product direction, and experience principles.
  • Lead discovery and research to deeply understand user motivations, behaviours, and energy literacy needs.
  • Design thoughtful, scalable solutions across mobile and web that influence how customers interact with energy.
  • Partner closely with Product and Engineering leaders to align on strategic decisions and ensure quality of execution.
  • Raise the bar for design craft and user experience across the organisation through example, critique, and shared standards.
  • Mentor and support designers of all levels, without formal people management responsibilities.

👉🏽 Key Responsibilities & Expectations

  • High-Value Problem Framing & Strategy
  • Bring structure and clarity to complex, ambiguous product spaces. Define the problem before defining the solution. Shape direction and guide teams toward the most impactful opportunities.

  • Exceptional Craft & Execution Quality
  • Deliver industry-leading UX and UI experiences. Model strong flow design, interaction clarity, visual polish, and cohesion. Establish patterns and approaches others follow.

  • Deep Customer Insight & Product Judgment
  • Synthesize research, market signals, data, and qualitative insights into product direction. Connect customer needs to commercial, regulatory, and energy-market realities.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Facilitate alignment across Product, Engineering, Data, and Operations. Communicate design reasoning with clarity and confidence. Support teams through trade-offs and complexity.

  • Org-Level Influence
  • Improve how design works at Amber — processes, rituals, critique, systems of quality. Uplift others through coaching, partnering, and hands-on examples. Operate as a multiplier.

  • Autonomy & Accountability
  • Act with high independence. Own outcomes, not just outputs. Hold a clear sense of responsibility for raising the overall bar of product experience quality.

🎉 Benefits

  • We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and a great culture of people who love coming to work to build a better world.
  • You’d be a part of a rapidly growing team of over 175 with expertise across energy, technology, marketing, and operations.
  • Be part of a growing technology start-up that will shape the future of household and grid energy use.
  • Flexible working hours with provision for regular work from home arrangements and a central hub in Melbourne CBD.
  • Equitable gender-neutral parental leave policies.
  • An external Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) for mental health support.
  • Competitive salary and share options in Amber.
  • Annual Learning & Development budget to support your personal growth.
  • Additional PTO between Xmas & New Year

This is a full-time role to be based ideally from Melbourne, but we are also open to considering the right candidate anywhere within Australia.

We have an office in the Melbourne CBD, where we work flexibly between the office and home. For those based in Sydney, catch up in a co-working space in the city every now and then, and rest of the locations in Australia work from home. We expect to remain Melbourne based but maintain flexibility between the office and WFH.

🌈 If this kind of work gets you excited, we'd love to hear from you!
We know that no one ticks every single box in a job description, and that’s okay. If this role excites you and you feel you could bring value, we would love to hear from you even if your experience doesn’t line up 100% with the list above.

🪄 Our hiring process will be as below:
- A screening interview with our talent team
- An intro call with the hiring manager
- A take-home case study assignment to work on in your own time
- A follow up case study interview with two of the cross-functional team members
- A final cultural chat with one/two of the Executive Leadership team members

We promise to be respectful of your time as an applicant while trying to be as thorough as possible in finding the right fit for our team.

Applications will be accepted only from candidates already based in Australia, preferably Melbourne with full working rights!

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted promptly. All other applicants will also be notified of the outcome as soon as possible.

No recruitment agencies please. We've got this! Thank you.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
