Job Description

About the role 

The Staff Data Engineer is a pivotal technical role within SEEK’s Data Services Team and will be reporting to Head of Data Delivery (APAC). The Data Services team is responsible for building data products to support SEEK's highest priority reports, analytics and models that drive our business.

In this role, you’ll leverage your deep technical expertise to partner with Principal Data Engineers to analyze complex challenges and define robust solutions, and take end-to-end ownership of systems in production to ensure reliability and performance. You’ll also mentor and guide junior engineers, helping grow technical capability and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement across the data engineering community.

Responsibilities 

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and operation of data engineering frameworks and tools.
  • Build and maintain frameworks for creating, deploying, and orchestrating data processing pipelines.
  • Develop tools and services for querying, managing, monitoring, and ensuring data quality, security, and lifecycle integrity.
  • Own the deployment, operation, and support of data infrastructure and cloud services on AWS.
  • Ensure platform health, delivering systems that are secure, reliable, resilient, and cost-effective.
  • Drive engineering excellence across teams through adherence to robust design, testing, and operational practices.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers, fostering technical growth and a culture of continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Skills and experience 

  • Proven experience in data warehouse and datamart design and development using dimensional modelling and/or Data Vault methodologies.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python, PySpark, and experience building data transformation workflows with dbt.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-based data architecture and services, preferably on AWS.
  • Deep understanding of data modelling, SQL performance optimization, and scalable data processing techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, enabling consistent and automated environment management.
  • Solid grasp of software engineering best practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and version control.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead, and uplift technical capability across teams through collaboration and coaching.
