As a Software Engineer, you will design, develop, and optimize backend services, build scalable APIs, and lead projects in a high-impact environment focused on Web3. You will collaborate closely with teams to ensure performance and reliability while taking ownership of the development lifecycle.

At Magic Eden, we’re breaking down barriers to make Web3 what it should be — intuitive, accessible and of course, magical. As the #1 Bitcoin dApp and the #1 NFT marketplace, we’re leading the charge to redefine the onchain experience. Backed by top-tier investors like Sequoia, Paradigm, Electric Capital and Lightspeed Ventures, we’re building a future where trading is seamless, tokenomics are meaningful and Magic Eden fulfills its mission of making digital ownership universal. Join our global team of passionate, scrappy and wildly talented people to help shape the next era of Web3 with us.

This platform will sit at the intersection of sports, trading, and Web3. That means high-volume data streams, real-time odds, market-making mechanics, and financial-grade reliability, all built from scratch.

We’re still small, moving fast, and setting the technical foundations for scale. The work is complex, high-impact, and very visible.

The challenge

This isn’t a maintenance role it’s a zero-to-one system build. You’ll design distributed, event-driven systems, optimise for speed and scalability, and make architectural calls that shape how millions of bets move across the network.

We’re looking for someone who can balance pace with rigor: ship fast, but build for the long term. You should be comfortable leading projects end-to-end from initial design through to production support and mentoring others along the way.

What you’ll do
  • Contribute to the design and development of backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and AWS.

  • Build scalable APIs and event-driven systems (Kafka, Kinesis, or equivalent).

  • Work closely with senior engineers to design, test, deploy, and monitor systems in production.

  • Collaborate across teams, from product to infra to ship features end-to-end.

  • Write clean, maintainable code, participate in design reviews, and learn from feedback.

  • Take increasing ownership over projects as you grow with the team.

What we’re looking for
  • 3+ years experience building production systems (backend or full-stack).

  • Solid foundation in software engineering principles and modern cloud environments.

  • Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, or other relevant backend technologies (e.g. Go, Python, Java, .NET).

  • Excited by real-time data, performance challenges, and building new products from scratch.

  • Growth mindset, you seek feedback, take initiative, and thrive in ambiguity.

  • Either familiarity with betting/sports systems or strong technical curiosity about high-scale, real-time platforms.

We value extreme accountability, collaboration, and clarity of ownership. Engineers here are expected to be self-directed — to identify what needs to be built and take it from concept to code. Bring your ideas, build prototypes, show them off.

Why join now
  • Join from day zero, when your code shapes the platform.

  • Build alongside founders who scaled Magic Eden from idea to unicorn in nine months.

  • Work directly with Sid Zhang (CTO/Co-Founder) and a senior engineering team with deep experience in large-scale, real-time systems.

  • We’re Melbourne-based, office-first (four days onsite while we build momentum).

  • Competitive compensation + equity at a company that’s proved it can scale fast.

This is a build-the-plane-while-flying-it kind of role.
If that sounds like your kind of fun, let’s talk.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
