Build your career and Australia’s future.

Not many people can say they are working on building Australia’s future. With us you’ll be doing just that, leaving a legacy for all Australians. Plus, there’s equal employment, great training, and true flexible working arrangements.

We have an exciting opportunity at nbn for a Software Engineer Expert. This role will report to the DevSecOps Manager, AI Platform.

A bit about your role

As the Software Engineer Expert, you will play a leading role in shaping and delivering nbn’s AI capabilities across the enterprise. You will guide the design, development, testing and deployment of end-to-end AI systems that address complex business challenges and unlock new opportunities for efficiency, insight and customer experience. Working within a collaborative DevSecOps AI team, you will be instrumental in building scalable AI platforms and applications, and ensuring their seamless integration into production environments.

You will bring a generalist mindset to full-stack software engineering, with accountability for detailed design and implementation across the application stack. You will define infrastructure as code, build and monitor applications, and lead the development of automated testing and deployment pipelines. You will also contribute to the technical growth of the team through mentoring, code reviews and knowledge sharing. Your ability to communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences will help foster alignment and shared understanding across stakeholders. This role is deeply embedded in nbn’s commitment to innovation, resilience and purpose-driven technology.

A bit about you

If this sounds like the role for you, you will likely have deep experience in designing and delivering AI-enabled software solutions, with a strong grasp of system architecture, API frameworks and cloud-native development. You are comfortable working across multiple programming languages and technologies, and bring a thoughtful, inclusive approach to problem-solving and collaboration. You understand the value of test engineering and DevOps practices and have experience deploying applications in AWS or Azure environments.

You are energised by the possibilities of Generative AI and LLMs, and bring hands-on experience with orchestration frameworks, prompt engineering and multi-agent system design. You may have worked with tools like LangChain, LangGraph or LangSmith, and are curious about emerging capabilities in fine-tuning and multimodal models. Your mindset is open, adaptive and generous—ready to share, learn and co-create with others. You thrive in environments that balance autonomy with teamwork, and you’re motivated by the opportunity to build technology that matters.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
