As a Software Engineer, you'll architect and scale new features, improve databases and APIs, and take ownership of the development lifecycle, enhancing Kogan.com's digital platforms.
Kogan.com is a pioneer of Australian eCommerce, and the software we build is used by millions of customers every day. You'll join a fast-moving engineering team with real ownership, shipping to production daily and using AI as part of how we work.
In this role you'll work across SQL Server and C# to keep our production ERP environment fast, stable and reliable, fixing issues at the root and supporting Finance and Operations.
What you'll do:
- Own and optimise SQL Server performance across a production ERP environment, including complex queries, stored procedures, views, indexes, and data integrity checks across large datasets.
- Design, troubleshoot, and improve backend application components in C# to support integrations, fixes, and enhancements.
- Investigate and resolve production issues across databases, applications, integrations, and huge distributed datasets, focusing on root-cause analysis and permanent fixes.
- Support and maintain ERP integrations and APIs, including REST-based services and service layers.
- Monitor system health across Windows Server and SQL Server, proactively addressing performance, stability, and security issues.
- Manage database-related operational tasks including backups, restores, upgrades, patching, and capacity planning for huge distributed datasets.
- Work closely with Engineering, Finance, and Operations teams to prioritise issues and ensure reliable system operation.
- Provide second and third-line support, producing clear documentation for incidents, fixes, and repeatable support processes.
- Assist with finance-critical data accuracy requirements, including reconciliations, postings, journals, and inventory updates.
- Contribute to automation and continuous improvement initiatives across support tooling, monitoring, and processes.
What you'll need:
- Proficiency using AI assisted development tools to support coding, debugging, testing and technical problem solving.
- Strong SQL Server expertise: writing and optimising complex queries, stored procedures, views, indexing strategies, and performance tuning across huge distributed datasets.
- Hands-on experience with C# in production environments, building and supporting backend systems.
- Experience supporting data-heavy or business-critical systems, ideally in ERP, finance, or operations domains.
- Understanding of APIs and system integrations (REST, service layers, middleware).
- Solid Windows Server and system administration fundamentals, including monitoring, patching, backups, and security.
- Proven troubleshooting skills in live environments, including logs, databases, integrations, and huge distributed datasets.
- Ability to manage multiple issues and stakeholders with strong prioritisation and time management skills.
- Clear communicator who can collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams.
- Analytical mindset with a focus on continuous improvement, automation, and long-term solutions over quick fixes.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene
Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
