Do work that matters

The CIO for Technology team ensures that CommBank has a world-class engineering capability and is at the forefront of technology, using innovative and emerging technology to help our customer and support our Group Strategy.

We work hard to ensure that best practice, whether inside CommBank or outside in the broader technology ecosystem, is discovered, sheltered, nurtured, and spread to wherever else it can drive the most benefit for the Group and our customers.

We are actively involved in the technology community, contributing to education programs, innovation, research, and partnerships that will set Australia up for success as the economy transitions to a more digital future.

See yourself in our team

The CIO for Technology team is seeking an experienced senior designer to join our new AI Powered Engineering function dedicated to working with Commonwealth Bank’s global engineering community to design AI assisted tools and capabilities in ways that improve the engineering experience and productivity.

As a Senior Experience Designer, you will play a key role in designing AI-powered engineering tools that are intuitive, effective, and optimized for our teams. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, data science, and product management, to ensure the seamless integration of AI technology into our products. Your designs will directly contribute to improving the speed, accuracy, and overall effectiveness of engineering workflows within the bank.

While the role is mainly focussed on designing for AI tools internal to the bank, you will also periodically work on more retail or business customer focussed projects across the team.

You will apply Human-Centered Design principles and methodologies to ensure our solutions meet user needs to create experiences that our engineers and staff will love.

We are seeking a team player who is enthusiastic about achieving outstanding results through collaboration and sharing, with a strong focus on user outcomes and a strong background working with technical stakeholders.

On any given week you will

  • Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and product managers to understand user needs and business objectives.

  • Design user-centric AI-powered tools that simplify and optimize engineering processes.

  • Create UI flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mock-ups to communicate design ideas effectively. Ensure designs are consistent with the bank’s design system and align with engineering requirements.

  • Use data and insights to understand the staff, customer and business drivers to define and measure UX metrics.

  • Conduct user research to improve on designs based on real-world feedback.

  • Apply service design principles to ensure the end-to-end user experience is seamless, ensuring alignment between product, technology, and customer needs.

  • Perform desk research and market analysis to identify high-impact areas for AI-powered tools and prioritize feature development based on market demand and potential business value.

  • Work closely with delivery teams to ensure design assets and specifications fit with their requirements, including Product Owners and Dev/Engineering teams, some based remotely.

We are interested to hear from people who have

  • Proven experience as a product designer, UX/UI designer, or similar role, with a strong portfolio showcasing design for complex software systems or platforms.

  • Experience with user research methodologies (human centred design) and ability to translate insights into actionable design decisions.

  • Ability to think beyond the digital solutions and recognise the role of the environment in how people use technology.

  • Experience with service design methods, focusing on delivering an integrated user experience across various touchpoints and services.

  • Technical acumen with the ability to understand and communicate trade-offs between design and engineering requirements.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present design concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong problem-solving, conceptual and design skills.

  • Expertise in design tools such as Figma.

  • Experience with designing for AI will be a plus but is not required.

Please include a portfolio demonstrating UX process, low and high-fidelity design skills, outcomes delivered with your application.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
