Do Work That Matters

Leidos Australia delivers IT and airborne solutions that protect and advance the Australian way of life.  Our 2000 local experts, backed by our global experience and network of partners, are working to solve the world’s toughest challenges in government, intelligence, defence, aviation, border protection and health markets.

Your New Role and Responsibilities

Join a small, high-performing team tasked with delivering meaningful technical and operational outcomes across a dynamic backlog of initiatives. Operating as an agile improvement team rather than through traditional project structures, this team is empowered to rapidly assess, design, and implement solutions that drive real evolution across ICT systems and processes.

The Senior Systems Engineer will play a pivotal role in translating ideas into action—working closely within the team and with other technical and process teams to bring clarity, structure, and execution to a wide range of work items.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will work with the team to deliver diverse initiatives, each scoped and prioritised through a collaborative backlog process. You will bring structure to ambiguity and provide solutions that are technically sound, operationally effective, and measurable.

  • Take ownership of improvements across End User Workspace, Cloud, Infrastructure, Process, and IT Service Management domains—from initial scoping through to implementation—ensuring alignment with business needs and technical standards.
  • Work with the team’s Business Analyst and Solutions Architect to define solution approaches, document technical plans for approval and execution, and produce user-focused materials that support adoption and clarity.
  • Deploy, integrate, and test ICT solutions across enterprise environments, ensuring minimal disruption and delivering maximum value to stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify risks and opportunities early in the lifecycle and develop mitigation strategies that protect delivery timelines and enhance solution outcomes.
  • Bring your experience to the broader team, providing guidance and support, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and shared learning.
Qualifications & Experience

You’ll bring a strong foundation in systems engineering, with the ability to work across a broad range of technologies and domains. Your experience will demonstrate both depth and versatility in delivering ICT solutions within complex environments.

  • Demonstrated hands-on systems engineering experience, ideally within Federal Government or similarly complex environments, with a track record of delivering impactful outcomes.
  • Proven capability across Microsoft platforms (Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP), virtualisation (VMware, Citrix), scripting and automation tools (PowerShell, Ansible, Terraform), enterprise monitoring (SCOM, SCCM, vCOPS), and cloud services (AWS, Azure, Oracle).
  • Familiarity with ITIL 4 principles and formal engineering methodologies, with a strong grasp of system lifecycle management, documentation standards, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Understanding of security protocols, certificate authorities, and technology management, with the ability to design and implement solutions that meet compliance and governance requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders, drive consensus, and deliver results in a collaborative environment.

Don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes – if you meet most of them, we encourage you to submit your application.  We’re most interested in your strengths, what you want to learn and how far you want to go.

Next Steps
  • To apply for this role, follow the links or apply via our Careers page.
  • Recruitment process - 1 virtual interview and/or 1 face-to-face & background checks.

At Leidos, we don’t want someone who "fits the mold"—we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, “what’s next?” before the dust settles on “what’s now.”

If you’re already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2… good. You’ll fit right in.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
