RequirementsWhat you'll do

You’ll take a high degree of ownership over the product’s architecture and the team’s velocity. You won’t just own features; you’ll own entire domains and the standards we use to build them. Specifically:

  • Solve Real Problems: You will talk to customers and look at feedback to find out what we should build next. You won't wait for a ticket to tell you what to do.
  • Build for Scale: Using Elixir and React, you will design systems that can handle 10x our current number of users while staying fast and reliable.
  • Make Big Decisions: You will decide how to balance new features with keeping our code clean. You’ll explain these choices clearly to the team and senior leadership.
  • Focus on the User: You will make sure everything we ship is easy and intuitive for students and teachers to use.

What we're looking for:

  • Senior Experience: You have spent 7+ years building and scaling products. You know what works and what usually breaks as a company grows.
  • Frontend Expertise: You are highly skilled with React and TypeScript.
  • Backend Knowledge: We use Elixir. If you know it, great. If not, we care more about your ability to understand complex systems and how data flows.
  • Self-Starters: You can take a vague idea and turn it into a clear technical plan that others can follow.

What success looks like:

In your first month, you’ll have a deep map of our codebase and customer personas. You’ll have shipped significant improvements and identified at least two areas where our processes or architecture could be strengthened.

By three months, you’ll be a cornerstone of the engineering team. You’ll be leading major workstreams, influencing the product roadmap through your insights from customer data, and proactively leveling up the engineers around you. You’ll be the person the team looks to when a problem is particularly thorny or undefined.

The team:

We're a team of eight engineers (five senior, three junior) led by an experienced Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager and Principal Engineer. While the team spans several time zones, this role is based in Melbourne on a hybrid basis. You'll work closely with teammates in the office and collaborate with our distributed colleagues across the week.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
