About the Role

AVEVA is seeking an experienced and commercially astute Senior Legal Counsel to join our team in Brisbane, supporting our business across the Pacific region. This role will primarily focus on commercial legal matters, partnering closely with our Sales and Commercial teams to review, draft, and negotiate customer contracts — including tenders, proposals, and complex enterprise software agreements covering cloud, subscription, and service offerings.

While the primary focus is commercial work, the Senior Legal Counsel will also support general corporate legal matters in Australia, providing practical advice on topics such as regulatory compliance, employment, and corporate governance as needed.

Working as part of an experienced and collaborative APAC Legal team, the successful candidate will play a key role in enabling business growth through pragmatic, solution-oriented legal advice. The role reports directly to the AGC and VP, Legal APAC, and involves close collaboration with colleagues across functions such as Sales, Procurement, Operations, Finance, and HR.

We are looking for a legal professional who combines strong technical expertise with business acumen, integrity, and sound judgment. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in negotiating enterprise software and technology contracts, be confident navigating cross-border legal issues, and excel at building trusted relationships across cultures. Occasional travel within the Asia-Pacific region may be required, and as the role develops, there may be opportunities to mentor and lead junior legal team members.

What will you be doing?

  • Be an integral part of the continued growth of AVEVA’s commercial deal pursuits as well as general legal issues that arise in the region

  • To ensure compliance with all applicable laws and group legal guidelines, we provide cross-functional and multi-disciplinary legal support and advice

  • Advise, review, draft, and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts, including but not limited to software services agreements, maintenance agreements, consultancy agreements, global contractual framework agreements, procurement, subcontractor, and strategic alliance agreements, as well as other in-bound commercial agreements

  • Liaise with and be the point of contact for internal business clients and other members of the legal department

  • Lead and assist with various special projects as may be assigned, such as developing standard contract templates, policies, and processes; improving the contract management process; and educating internal teams to ensure conformity and consistency in the application of relevant policies

  • Assist with all HR and licensing matters in the region

  • Manage and coordinate with internal subject matter experts, external counsel, and relevant authorities as needed

  • Prepare contract summaries, legal trackers, and dispute resolution trackers to aid in the management decision-making process

  • Assist in the development of legal procedures, practices, and structures to support APAC operations and businesses

Great skills to have

  • More than 10 years of experience as an attorney, preferably in a top-tier law firm or with relevant in-house experience with global IT services companies providing software licensing and maintenance services and with copyright, intellectual property, and trademark registration and protection matters

  • Sound judgment, strong communication skills in working with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Excellent contract negotiation and drafting skills

  • Experience managing outside counsel, competing demands and working under pressure

  • Familiar with business culture and ethics in Asia and experienced in international business horizon

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and work independently

  • Willing to travel

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
