Senior Engineer, Embedded Software

About the Role

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer in the Battery Insights team, you will lead the design and delivery of embedded software for advanced battery monitoring and insight solutions. You will work across firmware, hardware, systems, verification, and application teams to turn product and customer requirements into reliable, maintainable software. The role requires strong technical judgment, independent problem solving, and the ability to guide other engineers while contributing to architecture and roadmap decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, integrate, and maintain complex embedded software solutions for battery monitoring and insight products.
  • Lead the technical delivery of significant features and contribute to software architecture and design decisions.
  • Develop and optimize real-time software, device drivers, hardware abstraction layers, and platform services.
  • Analyze and improve software performance, reliability, memory use, power consumption, and startup behavior.
  • Investigate complex system issues using structured debugging, root-cause analysis, and data-driven methods.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, algorithms, verification, applications, security, and product teams.
  • Translate product and customer requirements into clear software requirements, designs, implementation plans, and testable outcomes.
  • Review designs and code, mentor less-experienced engineers, and promote strong engineering practices.
  • Contribute to automated build, test, release, and continuous-integration workflows.
  • Support technical planning, estimation, risk identification, and roadmap development for Battery Insights software.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelors or Masters Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 0-4 years of relevant embedded software or firmware development experience.
  • Strong C and C++ programming skills, including debugging and optimization in resource-constrained systems.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems, concurrency, interrupts, synchronization, and timing-sensitive design.
  • Experience developing low-level software or device drivers for common embedded interfaces and peripherals.
  • Experience with embedded processors or microcontrollers, including board bring-up and hardware/software integration.
  • Proficiency with source control, code review, automated builds, and CI/CD practices.
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical problems and communicate decisions clearly across disciplines.
  • Understanding of software quality, maintainability, testing, and lifecycle practices.
  • Awareness of open-source, proprietary, and hybrid software licensing models.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Embedded Linux or Linux kernel development experience.
  • Experience with ARM-based platforms and low-level debugging tools.
  • Experience with telemetry, diagnostics, data acquisition, communications, or cloud-connected edge devices.
  • Battery management, energy storage, automotive, industrial, or data-center domain experience.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages for test automation and engineering workflows.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, functional safety, or regulated software-development practices.
  • Experience working in globally distributed, cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through design ownership, mentoring, or delivery of major features.

What Success Looks Like

  • Delivers robust embedded software that meets agreed performance, quality, and schedule expectations.
  • Makes sound technical trade-offs and communicates risks and decisions early.
  • Improves team capability through reviews, mentoring, automation, and reusable engineering practices.
  • Builds effective working relationships across software, hardware, systems, and product teams.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
