No two days are the same. You might start by investigating database performance, tuning queries and resolving issues before they impact customers. Later, you'll collaborate with engineers on a new application design, automate operational tasks with scripting, or improve deployment processes to make releases smoother and more reliable.

You'll also:

  • Monitor database health, performance and availability, proactively identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Build and enhance backup, disaster recovery and high availability capabilities
  • Work with engineering teams to design efficient database structures and support application delivery
  • Automate repetitive tasks using SQL, Python, Shell scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code
  • Support database deployments, schema changes and CI/CD pipelines
  • Strengthen database security through access controls, encryption, auditing and compliance practices
  • Share your knowledge with teammates and contribute to continuous improvement across the platform

This is a role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, improving systems over time, and partnering with others to deliver resilient technology.

About the role

This role exists to ensure PEXA's database platforms remain secure, available, performant and ready to support our growing products across Australia and internationally. You'll combine deep technical expertise with a collaborative mindset, helping engineering teams deliver reliable solutions while continuously improving our database capability.

Key capabilities:

  • Enterprise database administration, including PostgreSQL, Aurora PostgreSQL or similar technologies
  • Performance optimisation and troubleshooting, with strong SQL skills and a proactive approach to improving reliability
  • Cloud database operations, ideally within AWS, including automation and Infrastructure-as-Code
  • Database resilience and security, including backup and recovery, disaster recovery, high availability and security best practices
  • Collaboration and continuous improvement, partnering with engineers and sharing knowledge to strengthen the platform

What success looks like (6–12 months):

  • Built strong relationships with engineering, platform and cloud teams
  • Improved the reliability, performance and scalability of our database platforms
  • Introduced or enhanced automation that reduces manual effort and improves operational efficiency
  • Strengthened database security, resilience and compliance through practical improvements
  • Become a trusted technical specialist who contributes to platform strategy, mentoring and continuous improvement

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
