Lead the design and development of backend services, optimize for speed and scalability, and mentor others in a zero-to-one system build.

At Magic Eden, we’re building the future of crypto entertainment. We began our Web3 journey as the NFT marketplace - but that was only the start. Today, we create immersive, social, onchain experiences that bring together culture, trading, gaming, and entertainment. Our goal is bold and simple: make crypto accessible, exciting, and unforgettable for the next generation of users. Backed by top-tier investors including Electric Capital, Lightspeed Ventures and Paradigm, we’re a global team of passionate, scrappy, and wildly talented people who don’t believe in limits. If you’re ready to take on big challenges, own your impact, and help shape the next era of Web3, you’re in the right place.

This new platform will sit at the intersection of sports, trading, and Web3. That means high-volume data streams, real-time odds, market-making mechanics, and financial-grade reliability — all built from scratch.

We’re still small, moving fast, and setting the technical foundations for scale. The work is complex, high-impact, and very visible.

The challenge

This isn’t a maintenance role — it’s a zero-to-one system build. You’ll design distributed, event-driven systems, optimise for speed and scalability, and make architectural calls that shape how millions of bets move across the network.

We’re looking for someone who can balance pace with rigour: ship fast, but build for the long term. You should be comfortable leading projects end-to-end — from initial design through to production support — and mentoring others along the way.

What you’ll do
  • Lead the design and development of backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and AWS.

  • Own your domain end-to-end: architecture, build, deploy, and monitor in production.

  • Build and optimise data pipelines and event-driven systems (Kafka, Kinesis, or equivalent).

  • Build relationships across disciplines like Infrastructure to remove blockers and get things done.

  • Contribute to technical direction, design reviews, and cross-team engineering decisions.

What we’re looking for
  • 6+ years’ experience building and scaling production systems.

  • Proven experience delivering high-throughput, low-latency services (fintech, betting, gaming, trading, or similar).

  • Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, or other relevant backend technologies (e.g. Go, Python, Java, .NET).

  • Strong foundation in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and data streaming.

  • Comfortable leading small teams or large projects, designing, developing, delivering, and supporting systems at scale.

  • Strong domain expertise in areas such as streaming, real-time data, distributed systems, or related high-throughput/low-latency platforms. Prior experience in betting or sports is a plus, but not required — we value depth of technical skill and the ability to solve complex, high-scale problems

  • Resourceful, respectfully opinionated, generous with knowledge. You care about quality, impact, and the people who ship alongside you.

  • We value extreme accountability, collaboration, and clarity of ownership. Engineers here are expected to be self-directed, to identify what needs to be built and take it from concept to code. Bring your ideas, build prototypes, show them off.

Why join now
  • Join from day zero, when your code shapes the platform.

  • Build alongside founders who scaled Magic Eden from idea to unicorn in nine months.

  • Work directly with Sid Zhang (CTO/Co-Founder) and a senior engineering team with deep experience in large-scale, real-time systems.

  • We’re Melbourne-based, office-first (four days onsite while we build momentum).

  • Competitive compensation + equity at a company that’s proved it can scale fast.

This is a build-the-plane-while-flying-it kind of role.
If that sounds like your kind of fun, let’s talk.

What you need to know about the Melbourne Tech Scene

Home to 650 biotech companies, 10 major research institutes and nine universities, Melbourne is among one of the top cities for biotech. In fact, some of the greatest medical advancements were conceptualized and developed here, including Symex Lab's "lab-on-a-chip" solution that monitors hormones to predict ovulation for conception, and Denteric's vaccine for periodontal gum disease. Yet, the thousands of people working in the city's healthtech sector are just getting started, to say nothing of the tech advancements across all other sectors.
